UPFA MP T.B. Ekanayake who is one of the MPs carrying out the protest said it would not be called off until President Maithripala Sirisena assured them in writing of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s safety and security.

The protesting MPs handed over a petition signed by them to Public Order Minister John Amaratunga urging a written assurance from the President.

“We are awaiting the minister’s response,” Mr. Ekanayake said.

A group of United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MPs earlier staged a protest inside the Parliament chamber against the Bribery Commission’s move to summon former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to record statements over an allegation against him.

The allegation levelled against the former President was that he had bribed a ministerial post to former UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake for his cross over.

MPs Nimal Siripala de Silva, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dinesh Gunawardane and Wimal Weerawansa were among those who protested against the Commission’s move.

The Prime Minister however assured that adequate security would be provided to Mr. Rajapaksa and he had been summoned only to a record a statement. (YP & LSP)

This is Sri Lankan politics, where egoistic assholes get in to power through lies and manipulation in order to gain their own wealth and power. As if any of these in JVP, UNP, or MR regime gave a shit about the country.

Ranjith Abeywickreme Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:38 AM

That would be decided by the competent authorities and the people., if you have nothing to hide, go ahead and comply the law, law should be and applied equal to all citizens and should be separated with any past merits or demerits as it’s about serious allegation which the citizens have a fundamental right to know! Facing an allegation isn’t a crime, but hiding is!

    Nims Tuesday, 21 April 2015 11:17 AM

Anyone who has committed an offense must be brought to book. If not tomorrow these MPs will ask for a written statement from the President for the safety of Duminda Silva.

Aiyo Sirisena Monday, 20 April 2015 10:23 PM

What is Law? It is what is passed by the legislature and signed in to law by the head of state and the executive. In 1977 I think then President JR Jayawhardhana signed into law that a President cannot be contested or charged for any action taken by him during his time as President. So for everyone who is questioning if MR is above the law need to realize that intact thanks to JR, MR is above the law for matters that concern his duration as president.

Mind your language Mr. When have you become a judge. This is something we wanted to rectify in Yakapalanaya. Not to accuse people on hearsay gossip but level proper charges and convict them.

Why are they requesting safety and security for Mahinda Rajapakse? He is not going to disappear when in BC. Disappearing happened to people who went against them during their regime (White van syndrome).

    Sincere Monday, 20 April 2015 09:06 PM

Ooh my goodness. Now I understand the reason why they are so afraid. They know the moment one is summoned by the BC he will be bitten by a poisonous snake. It so happened in the past to a guy. He is also seated here.

I find it very difficult to understand this lot of MPs who want MR back to rule and ruin us. Under MY3 rule so far we see lot of changes. We are moving into democracy. Life is better in terms of freedom and expression. There is less public expenditure. There is no family rule. Under MR rule none of these lot got up and spoke against MR.

    H.D.Gunaratne Monday, 20 April 2015 02:53 PM

They fear that if MR leads a section of the SLFP and contests the next election none of their M.Ps. will have a chance of getting reelected. Average voter is not concerned about the so called allegations of robbing the nation. They still love him for eradicating terrorism. So his group will definitely get about 50 seats. Present witch hunting is done to prevent him from coming to politics again.
