The UNP today succumbed to defeat at the General Elections by stating that the party had suffered a set back at the polls and will have to undergo a number of changes including a review of the structure of the organization .

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told journalists today that the party’s strategy and the organization structure will have to change after a full review of the election results.

When questioned what changes the UNP would do to the party’s structure, Attanayaka said he did not want to explain the changes immediately. (YP)

All changes except the vital change in leadership will be done. The biggest cancer of the unmarketable leader will remain forever until his death. He maybe a visionary and an honest man, but after so many defeats, hanging onto the leadership is nothing short of dictatorship.....Please Mr. Wickramasinghe, let us lick our wounds while you leave the leadership....Give it to someone young who has 6 years to rally the people around him. After 6 years and another election, all UNP's will be again feeling the same way they are feeling today if you continue.

The combined opposition lost Colombo only by 29,000 votes.

First, try to be Sri Lankan. People do not like to be a pray and alley with Forign powers. Remove all inbternational links with UNP, if you need to win hearts of Sri lankans. They are intellegent.

UNP language is too fine for the rural masses they must use
vulger language to win election and must nominate candidates who cannot speak any other language than sinhale. There you go.

This election I hope and pray has thought a lesson to all those in higher echelon.
Starting from Ranil, you my friend by abandoning your ally namely Sarath Fonseka lost your last bastion Colombo. You showed to the people that your ruthless way to stay in your position no matter what. Had you put up a fight for the General, you would have been a hero not a zero. As for Mahindha & rest of the goons you used all your power, money and state machinery was used to win the election. But seem like the harmless refuges and tamil people again and again showing their determination to send you the message that even most newspapers dare to publish.

    main changes political leader ship.......

    Friday, 09 April 2010 01:46 PM

SEND ALL THOSE CORRUPT UNP SENIOR MEMBERS TO ANGODA OR ON PENSION....GET NEW YOUNG EDUCATED ENERGETIC PATRIOTIC MEMBERS.....RANIL, KARU, TISSA,RAVI,MUNGOLA,

    Friday, 09 April 2010 01:37 PM

The change shoul start from the top, atleast now we will need a strong opposition leader!!!!

    Friday, 09 April 2010 01:15 PM

Meaning Ranil W has to go? His thinking that he would be the permanent opposition leader for next 6 years was futile. Maybe he can now go to Norway to be with his pal Solheim.

    Friday, 09 April 2010 01:12 PM

UNP should have a fresh Leadership............

    Friday, 09 April 2010 11:41 AM

common.....we are not kids..lets have a fair election and then comment on real defeat!!!!!

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:57 PM

Changes from Ranil downwards..If not, we will continue to have a weak opposition which is not beneficial to the country.Ranil must go

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:50 PM

Ranil's greatest wish is to remain as leader of the Opposition; what a leader and what an opposition!!

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:32 PM

It is sad to see what has happened to once a migty party under the leadership of RW. Why does he or the executive comitee does not understand that people of SL is not goingt vote for RW. To have a better democratic process, we need this party back in full swing.

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:30 PM

With Ranil at the helm? Oh my God!

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:09 PM

Even after this humilating defeat ,if you are not going to change the leadership of Ranil & Tissa then you are not going to win any election in this centuary.

    Friday, 09 April 2010 12:06 PM

what they need is an energetic leader like Sajith Premadasa, who can energize the grassroots movement.
Ranil is a great chap, but the fellow can't win an election if his life depended on it. He can remain as the Opposition Leader, but Sajith needs to take over the UNP.
They need to win over rural votes. They will get the urban vote anyway

    Friday, 09 April 2010 11:56 AM

First and foremost Ranil has to step down.
He is a shameless fellow. clinging into power.

    Friday, 09 April 2010 11:52 AM

UNP always talks about restructuring the party , but the efforts never materialize. They are played down by the party bureaucracy and these talks will continue only for few weeks of elections. It's pathetic to see the largest single party of Sri Lanka going down due to poor leadership.

    Friday, 09 April 2010 11:45 AM

Yes. Admit the defeat. Don't make lame excuses. Make changes to cater all citizens' needs, not just Colombo elites.
