The UNP said today that it would back any amendment for the creation of the post of executive prime minister by abolishing the executive presidency as there were attempts by the government to extend the term of the President by an unlimited period of time.

Speaking at a media briefing a short while ago, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya, while criticizing the government’s secretive operations for constitutional changes said that the government should not amend the constitution in an adhoc manner and keeping the entire country in dark.

Jayasuriya further noted that it should be done with the consultation of all the stakeholders of society including citizens.

“We have known about the government’s secretive operations only through the media.   We have heard about attempts to extend the terms of the President for an unlimited period of time,” he said.

Everything here is done in an adhoc manner, so not suprising.
UNP can set an example by not conducting party reforms in an adhoc manner first.

Executive president or executive prime minister what difference will it make if the UNP keep on lossing elections

Why is the UNP now afraid of the Executive Presidency.Dosent it tell the pathetic plight the UNP has fallen to during the last few years. Its almost a point of no return for the UNP ?

Oh the UNP playing another track. Is it beacuse they are scared to challenge the President. UNP is heading for doom and these statements only create a sence of desperation in the minds of the people who support the UNP

Executive President or Executive Prime Minister, it doesnt matter, anyway it will be a Rajapakshe.

Could be a try to secure the remaining UNP MPs within the party. But I'm pretty sure that Ranil will vote against at the last moment.

Be it the Executive President or the Prime Minister, do not allow a 2nd term. This is what is creating all the issues.

Wonder what would change by creating an executive Premiership against executive Presidency, unless there are constructive changes to the power structure. We are famous for changing names; Swarnaboomi becomes Jayaboomi, Janasaviya becomes Samurdiya etc etc but in actual fact it is the same ultimately. What is the big idea???

    Thursday, 17 June 2010 09:13 AM

Call it whatever you like, UNP will never win as long as Ranil is the party leader.
