The minor tremors felt in different parts of the country on Saturday night had apparently measured between 0.2 and 0.3 on the Richter scale, officials said. The tremors had been felt in areas such as Colombo, Ratnapura, Badulla and Jaffna.

“The Geological and Mines Survey Bureau which looked into this matter and according to the two earthquake monitoring centres, this was a minor tremor.

We assume that it should have measured somewhere between 0.2 and 0.3 on the Richter scale,” an official from the Disaster Management Centre said.

what is puzzling here is that a tremor in that scale is hardly felt the power is said to be equivalent to a grenade. USGS says "Earthquakes with magnitude of about 2.0 or less are usually called microearthquakes; they are not commonly felt by people and are generally recorded only on local seismographs" but on saturday people insisted that they felt this and also we saw some damage to some houses - this is consistent with 3.0 or higher tremors.
