The defence cost from 2006 to 2009 was only US 5.5 billion dollars, Central Bank Governor, Ajith Nivard Cabraal said a short while ago at the three-day seminar conducted by the Army.

He said that it was only 14 percent of the training cost of the US in Iraq and Afghanistan which was US 39 billion dollars. He also added that the country had to wage a constant battle against terrorist financing during the war.

“There were attempts to indirectly pressurize Sri Lanka and to keep the economy in a state of uncertainty. A large effort had to be made to depict the country’s economy in a positive light,” Cabraal said. (Supun Dias)

Did you consider (a) logistics distance between Iraq and USA (b) standard of life of an American and Slankan (c) standard of weapons, equipment, R&D. You are also an example of the difference of thinking between an American and Sri Lankan accountant i.e. incompetency.

Don't compare SL with US, their budget is Trillions, so 39 billions nothing. Not only that in US point of view, 39 billion is not an expense, that is an investment... They will get the return in trillions.

Sri Lanka's defence expenditure has gone up consistently since the end of the war and amounts to about 5% of GDP, nearly double that spent by India and Pakistan.
