SL hearing problems save Cowan

Sri Lanka have offered an explanation for the seemingly inexplicable decision not to have an Ed Cowan lbw appeal sent upstairs.

Cowan looked plum in front on five when he was hit on the pads by Nuwan Kulasekara, whose appeal was turned down.

TV replays showed the opener should have been on his way - but not before the Lankans had decided not to have the decision reviewed.

"I think everyone felt that it hit the bat; they heard two sounds," Sri Lankan century-maker Tillakaratne Dilshan told reporters.

"We were in two minds, in doubt, that's why we didn't review that lbw.

"Now we can see the TV - that's the way cricket goes."

It came on a day the tourists would have been frustrated by the decision review system (DRS).

Tailender Rangana Herath was given out lbw for a duck but replays showed he'd got a huge inside edge on the ball.

By that stage, the Lankans had run out of DRS referrals.

"They didn't really come our way," Dilshan said.

At least the runs came Dilshan's way at Bellerive, his entertaining 147 a breakthrough century on Australian soil.

The 36-year-old hit 21 fours in a seven-hour knock, his 15th Test hundred and second against Australia after a century in Galle in 2004.

In the process, he shared a record 161-run partnership with captain-in-waiting Angelo Mathews, the highest by a Lankan pair on these shores.

It clearly meant plenty to the blue-bandana-ed Dilshan, who raised his bat, helmet and eyes to the heavens in celebration.

"I'm always trying to score runs and I'm positive," Dilshan said.

"(Even) the first ball I don't mind, I just go for it first ball.

"It's a very satisfying thing ... the first in Australia's not easy, extra bounce is always a chance for bowlers." (AAP)

Well played Dilshan. I take my hat off for you.

This is no big deal, on field occurrences could possibly be the total opposite of what we see on TVs, plus, with only two referrals provided per innings, the team would have decided not take chances of ruining one of them against someone like Cowan. If it was Clarke or Hussey they would have definitely risked it.

now you can put it back

    hmm Sunday, 16 December 2012 11:13 AM

to come down to clarke or Hussey you need to first go past Cowan..

How many times you have done this to Sanga, Mahela & Thilan. I thought you may have forgotten to remove them even in your sleep. So unreliable these three test players.

First let them learn how to use DRS. They have forgotten the use of DRS playing much with World Cricket Dominating DICTATOR BCCI.

You are a Gem my son for the country. You have done your part. That's well and good enough.

    Kinithullah M.H Monday, 17 December 2012 09:13 AM

Dilshan is a simple guy and does his part for the country. Not driven by money.

    Huh Monday, 17 December 2012 10:37 AM

Dilshan is not consistant in tests.will need a more solid operners if we want to become the number1 test side.
