The world’s leading and  most discerning and trusted monthly travel magazine in Britain 'Condé Nast Traveller' has nominated Sri Lanka as one of the top five destinations to watch in year 2012. The travel experts of the magazine have predicted that Sri Lanka will be among the hottest new holiday destinations for travellers in the coming year.

Unveiling the list of destinations the magazine reveals that, “One of the great joys of travel is the feeling you've discovered somewhere special, somewhere that's all yours, for the first time - before the developers move in and the crowds descend. It could be a new and unexplored region, like the Arctic Circle, or an entire country that has been off-limits to tourists for political reasons, such as Sri Lanka and Burma.” Sri Lanka has been placed third in the list of destinations ahead of Britain, Australia and Abu-Dhabi .

This achievement is certainly a boost for Sri Lanka Tourism which has just recorded the highest ever arrivals to the country this year and targeting  2.5 million tourist by the year 2016. (Source: Sri Lanka Tourism)

Of course Sri Lanka is one of the best destinations, but we must know how to use this competitive advantage. We have to be tourist friendly nation... Because of new immigration regulations, tourists have to think twice before they get here... $50 per visa is freeking expensive as compared to our competitors like Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia or Bali which have free entry.

Exactly. They don't seem to get it. Not very far-sighted.

We have to be proud of it. Now the BIGGER responsibility is imposed on all of us. We are compelled to take care and honour all the tourists who visit our Island. We must somehow or other deserve the merit reposed on us. Minister of Tourism - get down to work - nothing should go wrong. No murder, assault, theft and thuggery should take place. Let us not call it an 'isolated incident'. If we want dollars, we have to show our Colours.

It may be true that Sri Lanka is a beautiful place and is placed in the top 5 places to visit in 2012, but the foreigners who visit Sri Lanka are treated with disrespect even by immigration authorities. Recently I witnessed the disappointment of some foreigners who were charged visa fees for 3 months and granted only 2 months without even a refund. This shows the level of ignorance and disregard we have for those who bring in foreign currency to this country.

when we give free entry we end up having the hippies and cheap tourists who are penny savers.. If we are to getthe high end of the tourists we are doing things right... come with ur dollars and we treat you nice, come with drugs n homosexuality, child prostitution, we give u the middle finger....and make u a "persona non grata...."

This nomination of Sri Lanka would have come prior to the killing of the British Tourist in Tangalle and the brutal injuries to his Russian girl friend. So lets see what happens in 2012.
