Six people were killed and 10 others injured when the van they were traveling in collided with a lorry along the Deduru-Oya bridge in Kurunegala early this morning, the police said.  All those who were killed were members of one family which included two children.

The injured were admitted to the Colombo, Kurunegala and Kandy hospitals and the driver of the lorry was taken into custody, the police added.

The passengers in the van were heading back from a trip to Jaffna and police believe the lorry was speeding at the time of the accident.

The Kurunegala police are conducting further investigations. (Daily Mirror online)

Sri Lanka needs to imrpove it's road infrastructure and take stern deterrent action against drivers who flout road rules. We can learn a lot from Singapore where even minor road rule violations are imposed with heavy fines. No one should be above the rule of law.

Govt. should have a hot line to report any reckless drivers so any one could report. The police should respond to those calls and take necessary actions. It is very sad that nothing is done against these reckless drivers.

Very Sad! Pls Look @ the Van, Its a Mini Van, (look like a "Hijet"), Really this kind of vehicle only care about how many Mileage per Liter, NOT ABOUT PASSENGER SECURITY!
