Six in custody for food poisoning

The Thalawakele police have arrested six persons including two school principals over the incident where 580 children were admitted to several hospitals for food poisoning last evening, police spokesman SSP Maxi Proctor said.

The principals of the Great Western Tamil College, Thalawakele Tamil College were taken into custody along with the food supplier.
All together 580 children were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya, Lindula, Kotagala, Dickoya and Maskeliya Hospitals.

The number includes 302 male students, 278 female students and 12 elders. The children had been participating in an event organised by a volunteer organisation to commemorate World Children’s Day at the two colleges’.

They fell sick after consuming the lunch packet given to them by the organisers. Most of them fainted, got fever and vomited. (Supun Dias)

    More important is whether samples of the food consumed have been forwarded for analysis to the Medical Research Institute in Colombo, and whether the food suppliers and food handlers have ben identified for action uhder the Food & Drugs Act.
    Penalising the hapless principals is idiotic.
