Ruwan released on bail

Journalist Ruwan Weerakoon who was arrested with some supporters of retired General Sarath Fonseka for allegedly conspiring against the government was released on bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate Champa Janaki Rajaratna today on the direction of the Attorney General.

However the passport of the suspect was retained by the court and he was restrained from leaving the country.

He was further ordered to appear before the CID every Sunday mornings. (TFT)

    This is a funny decision. Attorney General giving directions to the Magistrate. In 1990 I believe, the power to grant bail was taken away from the AG's powers. It is surprising that they are still having that power. Bail would have been granted long ago if the courts were independent.

    True , AG should not get involved in giving directions to Magistrates but who knows what more is in store now that the AG's Department is directly under the President himself. Very funny Law and Order in this country.

    He is the cause for many problems for the Army and other security related matters. The critics who support him should carefully investigate what he has done.
