The Court of Appeal converted the 12 year prison sentence imposed by the high court on Shramantha Jayamaha, for the murder of a 19 year old at the Royal Park apartment complex to a death sentence.

Yvonne Jhonssen was murdered on the steps of the Royal park apartments on the 1st of July 2005.

Earlier the Colombo High Court sentenced Shramantha to 12 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs.300,000. Details in the Judicial Medical Officers (JMO) report state that Yvonne Jhonssen died of fatal strangulation.  According to the JMO, Dr.M.P.A.A. Abeysinghe, Yvonne had 48 injuries on her horrendously mutilated body.

The Attorney Generals department appealed the verdict given by the High court and moved court to convict the accused for the offence of murder.

    Amila.G Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:31 AM

These things take place when the parents too are gallivanting and have no check on their young ones.

    dush Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:34 AM

Minister- you are absolutely right. It has now become a fashon to allow young girls to go night outs specially night clubs and to take liquor.
What has happened to this country. We should blame the parents of young girsl for this. Not to boys

    malkanthi Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:34 AM

May be this guy did not have sufficient influence at a time the murders of all sorts having a shopping spree.

    Nodrog Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:28 AM

Minister, typical remark from an outdated and out-of-touch moron. No one encourages their kids to go to a nightclub or do drugs.

Mahmood Ashraf Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:24 AM

Why are you being racist! why bring the muslim traditiontal clothes here wearing an abaya is not a crime and not wearing is neither a crime! its each person's lifestyle! some like to go out some dont. this is about a murder and what was done was a crime against humanity but as I understand you believe only muslims can do crimes like these ha! its not about religion its about humanity which I believe you dont want to understand

Katta Kuvera Wednesday, 11 July 2012 09:18 AM

Poor guy.He was driven to it. Was he not two-timing with her sister? So finally jealousy and infidelity put them in a mess.

Hungry Jack Wednesday, 11 July 2012 10:07 AM

Good lesson to all parents and there spoils brats !!!

    lankalion Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:51 AM

I don't personally agree with the Attorney General's department's stand point here and the Appeal Court's. The perpetrator was clearly under the influence of drugs when he committed the crime, meaning he had diminished capacity. In such an instance, he should not be convicted of murder but manslaughter - as murder requires a sane state of mind and the premeditation, which is unlikely to have happened here. This sentence should be appealed for the sake of justice for both parties.

The Judge Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:41 AM

At last Justice prevailed. Sorry about the loss of lives

    Ozzie Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:35 AM

They are both someone's child. Who are we to judge, was it premeditated or an awful accident? She's never coming back, he's done his time - give him a chance to rebuild his life. Does he deserve this chance - yes of course. he will never lead a normal life be it behind bars or not. God save them both!!!!

    Jeevan Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:34 AM

Even though it sounds backward, this would have at least saved that child's life!

    Marco Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:08 AM

these are sick and neglected kids coming from broken families and living on the wealth of their parents and thinking that money can save them from anything !!

May it be a lesson for such kids living on make believe world of Drugs !!!

    willows Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:49 AM

justice has been done, but it is the life style of parents and their children brought this misery???

    Kondeybendapucheena Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:56 AM

    Porak Thursday, 12 July 2012 07:40 PM

I got a good solution. Eradicate all night clubs. Eradicate Alcohol. Rest will be solved on its own.

    manpei Thursday, 12 July 2012 07:38 AM

80% of people commenting here blame the girl, her life style, night clubs, parents, money what not. So basically 80% are saying honda wadee!!! Shame on you all u are preaching about values and religion and look how heart5less you all are.

    johan Thursday, 12 July 2012 04:26 AM

This is an official death sentence more than this there are
so many unofficial death sentences in our country

    Paddy Thursday, 12 July 2012 04:26 AM

    Darren Thursday, 12 July 2012 03:33 AM

wow I was wondering happened to this case...it took 7 long years to for for some educated qualified professional to figure out a murder case ! wonder how long it will take to sentence the Criminals of today.

    Manik Wednesday, 11 July 2012 10:25 PM

When will the politicians who has the power to start executions give authority to do so?

Suhail modera Wednesday, 11 July 2012 08:09 PM

welcomes abolition of death penalty. With the signing of the new moove in lankan law ....No crime and no punishment without a law.

    Richardson Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:27 PM

angry bird Wednesday, 11 July 2012 11:02 AM

    ur telling me!

    Justinian Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:28 AM

Please implement the death penalty as it is the only way to curb the rising crimes in murder, rape, child sex etc.

    Navin Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:49 AM

Good job, blame the victims. Why not wear Abayas and stay indoors (unless accompanied by a male relative) while we're at it?

    Daniel Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:48 AM

I heard that he was on leave and allowed to visit home, slightly confusing,
but good that did karma bite his ass

    Genderist! Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:48 AM

Whilst not disputing that EVERYONE (including men) need to behave and drink responsibly. What do you mean by parents that 'encourage thier daughters' need to bear responsiblity. Parent should be more cautious and attentive to the values they instill in thier children - but what if you are suggesting that parents lock thier daughters in the house, then get an education dude! And secondly, no parent 'encorages' thier kid to go out party and waste thier youth in drugs, sex and rock-and-roll! Hold the government and the weak legal system responsible. Dont you think that a better monitoring of clubs or a tighter control on the drug supply chain and a quick response to such horrific murder cases could help?

    lankaman Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:39 AM

I hope MR will not use his executive power to save this convict like he has done for many other convicts

    savi Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:44 AM

I agree with you, we as parents should know to control our children..young girls who drink and do drugs...what more are they asking for ???

    savi Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:36 AM

why should only this young guy pay a price ? should'nt Duminda
silva and Bharatha case also be dealt in the same way ?
Duminda Silva has such a bad record..I pray this guy Shramantha would be given another chance ?

Patter Cake Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:35 AM

As the old saying goes "Money often costs too much" and thats what it did to this family ...

    John Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:31 AM

Don't show your ignorance in public. Society is evolving... keep up or die. There is nothing wrong in a person going to a night club or party. that is an individual choice and a basic human right. people like you are the reason for opression!

    asfar Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:24 AM

    yes....................justice delayed not denied...............

    Peter Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:44 AM

In all honesty ,SL is no more Dharmadeepaya. Death penalty should be re-imposed to curb crime. Court proceeding should be expedited.

    Duchee Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:28 AM

Don't imagine. Presidential pardon is a long process. even president doesn't like to exploit powers except in very limited circumstances.

    Duchee Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:18 AM

    Justice delivered...

    tarzan Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:17 AM

if he is a supporter of the govt, president can pardon him ?
this is the variance in man mad constitution and shariah law ?

king kudda Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:11 AM

Simple case, contact MARA, go blue and 100% guarantee the pardon. Once pardoned demand the MP post. nothing less nothing more. Good Luck !!

    Nodrog Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:10 AM

Good to see the law working effectively. Now we'd like to see justice in the Bharatha / Duminda case

    Minister Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:09 AM

Parents who encouraged their daughters to night club life and those who supplied drugs are also responsible !

    weha Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:03 AM

    Finally justice has prevailed.

    kan Wednesday, 11 July 2012 05:55 AM

Today's parents and youngsters must learn from this case. My sympathy goes to both the parents.

    Hussain Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:14 AM

Each case should be tried on its own evidence and culprits brought to justice.

    LongLeg Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:42 AM

First of all we should be sorry about the loss of this life. And wish the offenders death penalty is carried out.
We cannot say 'she had it coming' due to her life style. BUT the death or rape of innocent school girls (who are assaulted when they walk to school and not go partying in night clubs) in the rural areas are MUCH MUCH more tragic than this...

    Dot Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:36 AM

Sad story full of heartache for parents . This is not the first time a girl was murdered by a jealous boyfriend . Nightclub life has nothing to do with it . Anger managment would have helped or the timely intervention by some adult may be .

    LongLeg Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:35 AM

lot more than you think... check foreign news more frequently. good luck :)

buffaloa citizen Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:35 AM

You can never say...birds of a feather flock together.

    LongLeg Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:23 AM

mate i get your point - there was a better way to say that - ignore the people commenting below they are trying to look 'sophisticated' :D poor fellows.

    Vasi Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:26 AM

What drugs, what drink? Do you even know what you are talking about. This was a 19 yr old schoolgirl. Her lifestyle may not agree with your stone age morals, but by any standards she did not deserve to be so horrendously tortured and murdered. I feel sorry for her, her parents and even the parents of the rash boy who killed her. They should have noticed the signs when he was growing up?

    Hussain Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:19 AM

Many people here are blaming the parents for this murder. It has nothing to do with the parents. This man was a murderer like any and now he received a just punishment for his crime.

    Jayasena Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:06 AM

    Typical acts@many typical royal-parks.........

    Adam Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:03 AM

Even i had forgotten about this murder case. Man 7 years it has been going on.

    Vendetta Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:07 AM

Maybe when you come out of your rock that you live under, you will realize that a person's lifestyle is their choice, and just cause she went out and partied doesn't mean she deserved to be murdered. Ignorant people like you are a hindrance to human evolution.

    Hussain Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:10 AM

We in Sri Lanka do not go by the archaic religious sharia law.

    minister Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:03 AM

what a stupid statement, you un-educated moron! your name suits you! spoke like a true minister!

    Fusion Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:08 AM

Why only daughters? What about the sons doing all sorts of garbage? Going to a night club is not a crime. If you know your limits its actually fun place to be, unless a ministers' brat comes in shooting & raping. Plus, the drugs are supplied by YOU, The 'Minister'. When it comes to drugs & STDs main thing is education, awareness and above all self-control.

Yohan Perera Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:08 AM

Justice prevailed... but it cannot bring the victim back from death. Prevention is better than cure...

    Hussain Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:07 AM

The was no alcohol or drugs found in her body during the autopsy. So according your theory anyone who drink should be murdered?

    Hussain Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:53 AM

What an asinine comment? How many people are murdered going to a night club anywhere in the world?

    S. Wednesday, 11 July 2012 06:47 AM

She was murdered. Stop blaming lifestyles and the victim when there was clearly an individual who made a conscious decision to kill her.
