The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) today urged the government to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) saying it was misused by the previous regime to suppress media and human rights activists in the country.

CaFFE Executive Director Ranjith Keerthi Tennakoon said the Act was mainly implemented to curtail the freedom of the people.

At a meeting with civil activists in Rajagiriya, Mr. Tennakoon said the Act was used to detain media personnel and several civil society activists without a time limit.

“With the scourge of terrorism eradicated some six years ago, the implementation of the PTA is a great obstacle for the individual liberty. Our country has been accused of violating Human Rights by several groups. With a stable government in place, action should be taken to recind the PTA and re-establish a proper civil administration in the country so that people can live without fear,” he said. The Prevention of Terrorism Act was grossly misused by the Rajapakse regime for their own ends long after terrorism had ended. It should be repealed without delay.

Yes, you are very correct. This must do without any delay.

What has CaFFE got to do with PTA? Are they not aware of the IS threat?

    Rajiv Wednesday, 26 August 2015 07:24 PM

When KP/Karuna are free then why a PTA, this for whom?

    Mark Thursday, 27 August 2015 06:52 AM

Why not make use of the act and take all the HORA s into custody

    lkboy Thursday, 27 August 2015 10:46 AM

I think it should be amended instead of repealed.

This one and only director of CAFFE is like a bull in the China shop. Earlier he wanted to increase MPs to 255 through 20A. This sudden request is to avoid culprits being detained in the Eknaligoda murder case?

    Flavia Thursday, 27 August 2015 11:51 AM

Correct! that is why they want it repealed soon for their own safety. Dont you get the message !
