British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that his country wants Sri Lanka to ‘do better on Human Rights, to investigate alleged abuses and war crimes in the past.

In an interview with Adam Boulton on Sky News yesterday, the Foreign Secretary said: “there were “difficult aspects to the relationship.”

“We want the Government of Sri Lanka to do better on human rights, to investigate alleged abuses and war crimes in the past. So we have a slightly difficult relationship with Sri Lanka in some ways, but we do meet them and talk to them.  I met the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister when he came to London two months ago.”

I think this again an indication of UK's attitude on SL as a UK's colany ,,, and they still believe SL is under their preview,,, we could accept if this has been asked by an independent body say for an example UN although it is also western biased,,,the issue is this statement is coming from another country, who thinks still SL is their perview,,I would surprise unless the Gov of SL resond to this statement,,,

    kingkong Monday, 20 December 2010 10:37 AM

Ya why dont we?ask every sinhalese 2 return back to this free and fair country

    kingkong Monday, 20 December 2010 10:32 AM

    Really???????

    N K Ratnam Monday, 20 December 2010 10:14 AM

Dear DM why are you only publishing one sided comments. I have been trying to reply to the one sided accusations against the Tamil people while the atrocilties that were committed against the Tamil people never got told. Many Sinhala people never knew what the S/L armed forces were doing in the North and East in the name of security. They were killing innocent people left right and centre with total impunity. Not a single soldier was punished for the massacres of Kumuthini Boat, Mathahal bus masacre (in which my family got murderd), Nagar kovil school massacre.

These were innocent people yet the news never hit the national papers. Is DM condoning these actions? Is that why you are filtering my comments?

    rohan Monday, 20 December 2010 10:10 AM

The problems is you can count how many bombs went off in Colombo but you never know how many went off in north and east you know why you simply can not count the whole 3 generation innocent people wiped out by srilankna forces

    Saleem Monday, 20 December 2010 09:58 AM

What the comments above do not reflect is that US, UK killed foreigners whereas Sri Lankans were bombed in Wanni. China can protect Sri Lanka in UN SC likewise those world powers can escape any such probes.

    Manoj Monday, 20 December 2010 09:50 AM

Fazal!, you have to defend yourself. you can just go and say UK & US commit crimes in Afghanistan & Iraq, so we can?.. thats bad.. really bad... get some education buddy!

Click Lanka Monday, 20 December 2010 09:50 AM

Ranil & UNP IS BEHIND ALL THIS ,recently Ranil went and met THIS MAN William Hague , most of this attacks to
Sri Lanka & Mahinda was orchestrated by this traitors Ranil & Jayalath.

    Dinithii Monday, 20 December 2010 11:19 AM

Mr Desilva, even if SL has killed LTTE Terrorist leaders who raised white flags we are clean in our minds because if they had lived to 'fight another day' there would be 1000s of dead innocent civilians. But according to 'international law' it is wrong!! That is a war crime. What is good or bad/crime or not are purely built based on law which is in turn based on culture/experiences of different countries. One country's good deed can be a crime in another. That is why we are afraid of investigations.

    Alian Monday, 20 December 2010 09:33 AM

Well the UK govenment blocked all the activities in UK, and banned LTTE. Still you think that they were blind...

    dan Monday, 20 December 2010 09:24 AM

friend its because they wan to show their power on developing sri lanka,,, this is politics,,,, sad about your understanding friend

    dan Monday, 20 December 2010 09:20 AM

my friend,,,William is asking an investigation not to see our purity,,, but to show their dominance on SL,,,,,

and other thing you try to understand the what is called "sovereignty"

    thnak you!

    fazal Monday, 20 December 2010 09:19 AM

YOU SMELL SOMETHING BAD OR GOOD....WHAT ABOUT INVESTIGATIONS IN AFGHANISTAN,IRAQ, VIETNAM AND IN AFRICA TOO.....

    Siri Monday, 20 December 2010 08:58 AM

Of course you are referring to the dozens and hundreds hacked in villages and bombed in cities routinely by LTTE, yes? Killing its own people and causing immeasurable damage to property to one's own motherland, that gave free education and milk, right? Yes, I agree, in some ways worse than Israel.

    Roshan D W Monday, 20 December 2010 08:41 AM

The same UK govt did not make ONE comment when thousands of civilians were killed by the LTTE.Never even accused LTTE for anything. What right do you have now to speak to the SL govt about human rights?

NOBEE PERERA Monday, 20 December 2010 07:46 AM

WHY NOT THEY INQUIRE WAR CRIMES IN IRAQ. WHY NOT THEY INQUIRE WAR CRIMES IN FLAKLAND ISLAND. UK KINGDON HAVE LICENSE TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD? BEFORE THE INDEPENCE INDIA, SRI LANKA AND OTHER COUNTRIES UNDER BRITISH EMPIRE MILLIONS OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS KILLED BY UK ARMY. ANY WAR CRIMES FOR THEM?

martin thomas Tuesday, 21 December 2010 01:42 AM

If we have nothing to do with the killings and our troops were following the international rules to fight a war why are you afraid to let anyone to come and do impartial investigation that would clear our name. Or are you trying to hide some thing from the rest of the world?? Can you tell me who killed houndred of soldiers and buried in Wanni. Did you kill your own soldiers fearing they belongs to the other camp?? Can you be honest and come out clean.

    kanishka Tuesday, 21 December 2010 07:06 AM

thats not the case..the problem is the credibilty of the so called independent states and groups?will they do a impartial inquiry?do they have the ridght to do a inquiry while they have been violating human rights sinsce beginning of the history up to now

    Ryan Tuesday, 21 December 2010 06:22 AM

Yes 1815 should be the start year we have to thrive government towards this.

    Okay Tuesday, 21 December 2010 03:46 AM

This man William Hague is dancing to the tune of the British Tamil Forum, as every knows are the LTTE and their supporters. He is very pally with them because pathetically some members of Parliament, Tories in Hague's case, Labour and Liberal, are begging the votes of the large Tamil population who live here! Human rights violations in Iraq and Afghanistan committed by the Allied Forces are blown to the wind. What a double dealing hypocrite this man Hague is!

    Lankan Tuesday, 21 December 2010 03:36 AM

What about the 400+ police officers that the LTTE lined up and shot in Batticaloa after they surrendered? LTTE sure didn't honor any human rights then... The IGP at the time ordered those police officers to surrender so that their lives can be spared but the LTTE killed them in cold blood... What about their human rights? What were you doing then Britain? You're so upset over the deaths of terrorist leaders who have been violating the rights of average Sri Lankans for decades... Or is it because we cannot elect you in to parliament that we are insignificant to you??? All those civilians who died in suicide attacks are not important? Their rights don't matter? Double faced hypocrites the whole lot of you!!!

    JayPee Tuesday, 21 December 2010 02:24 AM

    Sigh!

This only shows how deeply divided we are. I don't see anyone reaching out to the other side. Even though we are one nation on paper, we have already divided our country. Makes me wonder who the real patriots and who the real traitors are.

    JayPee Tuesday, 21 December 2010 02:20 AM

Hmmm if they were so capable, why on earth are they still suffering in the opposition?

    nilame Monday, 20 December 2010 06:59 AM

OK come tommorow to SriLanka. But bring along with you your grand grand farthers from the hell. We will get ours from the heven. We will discuss here what your people did here when you took our country under your control. When results come be prepare to pay us.Know your history before you teach other countries.

KP is lives to fight another day.

    channa Monday, 20 December 2010 03:30 PM

This will never happen......As per the Western countries....abuses takes place only in 3rd world countries....

    nagu Monday, 20 December 2010 03:27 PM

Exactly......LTTE is not the only people who represent Tamil People.....Remember Thamilselvam and so many Tamil leaders killed by the LTTE.... They kill their own people....

    nagu Monday, 20 December 2010 03:24 PM

All this for 25,000 Tamil Diapora votes....UK people will soon realise these LTTE supporters will have more power than the British citizens (Those who have lived in UK for centuries)..

    Sam Monday, 20 December 2010 02:37 PM

US did drop not one but two atom bombs. They used napalm in Vietnam, used captured combatants for experiments , dropped cluster bombs in Iraq, Afghanistan. Still kills dozens of civilians in drone attacks.

Where are the UN commissions of inquiry for these? Let's start with the atom bombs shall we.

    kumar Monday, 20 December 2010 11:42 AM

Mr. N.K.Ratnama, the many thousands who dies in attacks by suicide bombers in Colombo, Kandy, Anuradhapura and so many other places were equally innocent. This whole thing was started by Prabakaran when he shot Durayappa in 1976, followed by the shooting of Bastianpillai and then by the soldiers.

    NKARUNATHILLEKE Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:06 PM

Dear HAGUE, It is better to be an example to the other countries by doing yourself THE HUMAN RIGHTS PROBE about your soldiers in IRQ and AFGHANISTAN! The Gentlemen should work this way! WHITE MANS' BURDEN IS STII THERE IN YOUR HEAD? POOR ENGLISHMAN!

Karuna Amman Monday, 20 December 2010 03:00 AM

Wilee is descending from a nation that does not have any kind of "WILI"... So this statement is not a surprise. They lived on our resources since 1815. Killed and tried to demolish the Sinhala nation (Then Sri Lankans) by root. Stole our gold, raped our women.. Now suddenly they are talking about some HR. What a joke. Brithish owe to us in Trillions of Dollars... How about repaying them to build our country? That's only if they really value HR.. (Please publish this)

    LANKONIS Monday, 20 December 2010 03:02 AM

WE HEARD YOU ARE A ONE OF IN LTTE PAYLIST..IS IT TRUE MR.HAGUE? ANYWAY SHALL WE START WITH WAR CRIMES IN IRAQ & AFGHAN? ...

FRANCIS BENEDICT Monday, 20 December 2010 02:52 AM

    Mr.Britsh Foreign Secretary,
Why don't you ask your big brother UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to INVESTIGATE WAR CRIMES in IRAQ and AFGENISTHAN before you open your fowl mouth about SRI LANKA

    Padmini Monday, 20 December 2010 02:51 AM

Mr Hague, Don't depend on LTTE terrotists and tamil votes. We know what LTTE terrorist did past 30 years in all over the Sri Lanka not only North and East. How many bombs blasted in Colombo area. How many people dead because of this LTTE terrorism Why do you think only tamils. Don't support terrorism. It's shamed to tell UK ruled our country. We support our present leader because he escaped lots of lives and LTTE terrorism.

Damien Perera Monday, 20 December 2010 02:45 AM

Hey man, what about the War crimes that Israel has been committing on a daily basis for more than SIX DECADES on a DAILY basis right in front of your nose?

The Israelis use planes, artillery, tanks, WMDS, to kill and maim Palestinians, to destroy the homes and crops, hospitals and buildings at will.

Why they have even imposed a BLOCKADE against Gaza preventing food and essentials from reaching more than a million and a half people for more than 2 years literally starving them.

As if that is not enough, they attacked and killed 9 people on a vessel on a humanitarian mission carrying essential items to the starving people just a few months ago.

Hague, how come you can't see all the outrageous atrocities committed by the Israelis? Have you ever called the Israelis to account for the tens of thousands of their war crimes?

    ranjith Monday, 20 December 2010 02:20 AM

Sri Lanka should withdraw diplomatic mission in London as a strong response to this and introduce some trade sanctions against UK. We, brave Sri Lankans like our king, should teach them a lesson. Then whole world will kneel down before our king.

    David Sunday, 19 December 2010 06:46 PM

Yes,Yes,Yes,,, We must start from you; India,Sri Lanka, Burma, China, list goes on....We never went to conquer other innocent countries by killing civilians.

Punchi Putha Monday, 20 December 2010 04:03 AM

You cannot compare SL with Israel, because Israel did against another country, SL did against its own citizens. It is a pity that you know very well what happened thousands of miles away from SL, but dont know what happened in your own country. Know the facts before talking.

THE JUDGE Monday, 20 December 2010 04:20 AM

Ask KARUNA, if ever he committed human rights violation, if so sacrifice him in the alter

    Arjun Monday, 20 December 2010 04:27 AM

    Janaka Monday, 20 December 2010 06:05 AM
