Several local celebrities including politicians, singers and cricketers took a dousing during the past few days in the name of raising funds for various charities by being part of the Ice Bucket Challenge that has taken up the online sphere by storm.

Among the local celebrities who have participated in the challenge and posted the videos so far includes Otara Gunawardena, Iraj Weeraratne, Bathiya Jayakody, Hirunika Premachandra, Malsha Kumaratunga, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara.

However, most in this list did not take an actual dousing of ice water and instead used alternatives such as rain water and pool water in order to avoid wastage. Mahela and Kumar meanwhile took the dousing in the ice bath that is used for recovery of sports injuries in order to save water.

“Challenge from Otara Gunewardene to both Kumar Sangakkara and I accepted! I’ll be making a donation to the ALS ‪#‎ALSIceBucketChallenge‬. I think it would be nice to see Angelo Mathews, Michael Clarke and Rahul Dravid join in the fun so I in turn set out the challenge to them,” Mahela posted on his facebook with the video.

Sagakkara nominated cricketers Virat Kohli, Dale Steyn, Adam Gilchrist.

Some of these celebrities have also challenged interesting personalities to take the campaign forward to which includes Malsha’s nomination of the President and Minister Mervyn Silva and Hirunikas nomination of JVP politburo member K. D. Lal Kantha. Most of the funds raised by these celebrities have been donated to local charities involved with animal rights and welfare.

The Ice Bucket Challenge that kick started on July 15 dares the participants to be filmed while having a bucket of ice water poured on them. As per the terms of the challenge, each participant has to nominate three more names to take up the campaign and those nominated should take up the challenge within the next 24 hours or forfeit by donating funds to charity. Among the celebrities who have taken a dousing for the cause worldwide includes countless celebrities - Justin Bieber, Iggy Azalea, Chris Pratt and Lady Gaga.(LP)

    no 1 stupid things

    Nihal Tuesday, 26 August 2014 09:11 AM

Buddhika Pathirana's tirade against this ALS Donation wave was hilarious. Hus reason, there are many who dont have water to drink. I hope this politician is NOT guilty of wastuing or even misusing any common utility, including the air that we breathe. Woud he also oppose the "Pink-Ribbon" in support of aids or the black arm-bands, just imagine how many reams of cloth are being wasted and how many people in this world hardly have one proper piece of clothing to keep warm!!

Sylvia Haik Monday, 25 August 2014 11:27 AM

I agree it is childish but most of the Sri Lankans at least are not wasting precious drinking water that is a scarce resource in many countries.

    Dayawathie Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:56 AM

I took up my own ice bucket challenge and no one cared about it. What's this baila ?. People do stupid things and ape the west. If you really want to do charity, you don't have to tell the whole world about it. Just go and do it. For some, any rubbish coming from the west is like gold.

gon fonseka Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:49 AM

Cheap popularity. Good things no cheap. Cheap things no good. Now Mahela and Sangha are also looking for more poularity the cheap way. Bloody fools.

    Meemassi Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:25 AM

Why donate for animal charities? So many poor human beings in our country, help them and the fellow countrymen suffering from the drought. After that help the animals.

    Waco Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:23 AM

These people are having fun wasting government money.
There are serious issues for politicians to attend to rather than "Ice Buckets".
If they can not understand that, donate their salaries to Charities.

    Waco Sunday, 24 August 2014 07:16 AM

I thought cricketers have better brains.

    Fernando Sunday, 24 August 2014 12:07 PM

A donation is something that is given genuinely to help someone in need. Kumar and Mahela you both are respected as sportsman. Dont let yourselves into the category of cheap politicians doing stupid things. via DM iPad app

    idroos2002 Sunday, 24 August 2014 06:08 AM

    AA Saturday, 23 August 2014 04:29 PM

Don't these people have better things to do in life and better ways of donating to charities than making fools of themselves. These are gimmicks for the media. Please think of the millions starving in this country before you give to animal welfare. I am amazed that Kumar and Mahela took to this nonsense.

    chinthaka Sunday, 24 August 2014 04:56 AM

    1 : 3 pyramid madness .
Although ALS awareness is good we do not like to see Mahela and Sanga doing this kind of things.

    Fair N Square Sunday, 24 August 2014 12:21 AM

what significance? its another case of ape-ing the west... come up with own ideas of funding for charity..Be creative and do something worthwhile... good to see welfare of animals being the target, but HUMAN BEINGS need welfare and the same effort or even more is needed... EBOLA victims of the USA have been treated and sent home, while many are DIEING in Africa for want of Proper medication...

    saliya Saturday, 23 August 2014 10:52 PM

Please stick to the original cause. Promote ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Do not kill, insult and misuse the objective of the challenge.

For other charities you can have a bath without Ice and on a different day.
