No political pressure-Police

The police said today that Malaka Silva was not arrested at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya because the policemen on duty had not been informed that he was wanted in connection with the alleged assault on the army major.

They said they were keen on doing a thorough investigation before arresting him.

Western Province Senior DIG Anura Senanayake said the police were not under pressure from any quarter with regard to the investigations.
He said the police had obtained a court order to obtain the video footage recorded on 13 CCTV cameras.

DIG Senanayake said the statements were recorded from Malaka and Rehan Wijeyaratne within 48 hours after the incident. However the media was told that he had to be arrested to record the statements.

“We ordered them to come to the Kompannaveediay police station at 8.00 a.m. today and if they had been late even by a minute I prepared to send three teams of police officials who were on standby to arrest them,” he noted. “We could have sent a message to the 2,000 policemen on duty at the Kelaniya Temple at the exposition of the Kapilavasthu Relics but our main objective was to arrest the suspects involved after a proper investigation,” he said.

DIG Senanayake said the police are investigating whether the Major was at the hotel to track down a drug trafficking operation.

“We have also arrested the man who handed over the pistol to the police. There is an investigation on the other hand whether the Army Major had informed his camp before going to the hotel with his pistol,” he added.(Supun Dias)

That means any officers can be assaulted. if they have not informed the Camp before they leave?

Why you are having Two-faced and lie? of course there is a political hand behind the scene, every body knows that.

This is rubbish, Police arrest anyone without a court order in Sri Lanka. The man in the center is a son of a minister, I think the Western Province Senior DIG Anura Senanayake got to ware a diaper as he talk to the media. He is shaking, what a good POLICE department we have. I am wondering what will happened next? Malaka has been in the spot light for several years therefore law should not allow hih out on any bail as he is danger to the community, and If if has been done by an average Sri lankan, how different the POLICE reaction would be? We all should question this...? Keep records of the way they treat this MALAKA (The thug).

    Moven Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:09 AM

Police normally consider the past records of criminals when crimes are repeated. This oaf of an DIG forgets how Malaka assaulted an accountant a few years back at a club in Bambalapitiya. If you have a spine arrest "Yakada" Radaliyagoda.

Sherlock Holmes Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:08 AM

This DIG is a well known crook . He is well known for taking bribes, money lending and with close relations with drug dealers and thugs. He is also a great friend of Mervin Silva and Malaka and his gang. This is the last fellow who should handle this case. Do you remember how he let loose the White Van crooks in the Kolonawa affair. . Dont beleive a word this mongrel says.

    Lobo Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:42 AM

Politicos and their croonies get preferential treatment while for the rest the treatment is ' shoot first and ask questions later'.

    Nodrog Tuesday, 18 September 2012 12:50 AM

Such a shame. This proves to what extent the police dept has been prostituted to have to make up excuses to protect a notorious minister's equally notorious son.

    RegularJoe Tuesday, 18 September 2012 09:13 AM

does this policeman want us to believe this fairy tale? does he think SL is made up of 5 year olds? who are they kidding?

Saliya De Silva Monday, 17 September 2012 03:26 PM

This is a big change in the police department, to conduct investigations before arresting a person?.

Normal practice is to arrest and remand a suspect and then conduct investigations.

He is qualifying to become IGP.

    J.D. Monday, 17 September 2012 03:38 PM

Poor Army officer...... finally the blame will come back to him and the culprits will be free.........this is the story building up by police......

Ben Hurling Monday, 17 September 2012 04:02 PM

Operation "Bamboozle Sri Lanka" has begun. Courtesy DIG Senanayake.

2 criminals Malaka & Rehan were taken in because public rage was about to engulf the regime.

They had to do something to calm things down.

    It is an enacted drama.

Soon the "Major", the victim will be punished.

Calistus Jayatilleke Monday, 17 September 2012 04:10 PM

So, what Minister Keheliya was telling about Police not arresting culprits inside sacred temple premises is not correct! Anyway, so far so good and we are eagerly waiting to see what happens next.

    Curious Monday, 17 September 2012 04:11 PM

In other words no warrant was issued for his arrest but requested him to come over to the police station !!!
Will the same apply to anyone else too?

Balu Silva Monday, 17 September 2012 04:19 PM

    Cobbler Monday, 17 September 2012 04:09 PM

    All idiots please believe this.

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 18 September 2012 02:43 AM

Already the two main suspects are sleeping nicely in the prison hospital and very soon they will be transferred to the Merchant Ward. Thereafter, the scenario would be like this: they are suffering from some undisclosed serious illness and would be airlifted to a hospital in Singapore and after a series of operaions, they cannot remember anything. CID cannot arrest them without an order. Case closed!
