One 1,000 SL/Rupee coin = 4.83 UK Pounds or US$7.66. So in the context of other currencies this is not such a large amount.

    Appuhamy Monday, 12 November 2012 05:56 AM

All have missed the point and rushing to criticise the Government. This is supposed to be a silver / commemorative coin and not to be used to buy a bottle of arrack..

What a foolish decision! Most of developed countries do away with coin circulation. True, they cold be used for a long time; but high handling cost. Bad for the economy on the long run.

The Central Bank should seriously think of phasing out all the coins from 25 cents onwards and start with coins ranging from Rs. 1000.- to reflect the actual current sad situation with regard to our currency. That should definitely keep the beggars too very happy !

Now if only they also made a Rs. 500 Coin. All employers can give their employees just 3 coins (thuttu dekahamara) to live according to Bandula's recommended life style. :D

Andrew Pitugala Monday, 12 November 2012 04:48 AM

There are many who cannot afford to possess a Rs.1000/- coin, where as they will be gifted to all the top people and will be a collector's item..

    Abdul Monday, 12 November 2012 04:50 AM

People don't like to keep even the 10 rupee coin because they get messed up with 2 Rupee; hopefully this will be only for commemorating & nothing after that; A Stamp could have been a better idea

    OMG Monday, 12 November 2012 04:50 AM

The way things are going the beggars at traffic lights will be throwing back the 1000 rupee coins at our faces, like they throw one rupee and two rupee coins now.

Guys, just don't find fault with averything in
Life only shows how unhappy you are . This coin is a mere commemorative release - not for public . Here have been many coins before with the face value 500, 1000, 5000. E wry central. Bank does this .how can Sri Lanka or these. Individuals go anywhere with nagging people like this

    Shaan Monday, 12 November 2012 05:17 AM

Wow... Just the thing Sri Lanka wants right now....

Yohan Perera Monday, 12 November 2012 05:19 AM

I agree with the Poet. Lets not babble just because God gave us a mouth. Lets not leave comments just because we have the freedom of expression...

    Nina H. Kamal Monday, 12 November 2012 05:29 AM

It was always risky carrying notes in your wallet, a few minted coins in your pocket does not harm, neither the budget nor the CB!!! Lets keep our beggars/pickpocketers happy!
