It was ironic that MPs who were among the 142 MPs who hadn’t passed their Advanced Level, were questioning the qualifications of the three members nominated to the Constitutional Council (CC), the CaFFE organisation said today.

“We have identified that a number of MPs, who were infamous for election law violations, election related violence, abusing State property, attempted intimidation of public servants and bribe voters, are at the forefront of the campaign to stop the CC being appointed,” Executive Director of CaFFE Keerthi Tennakoon said.

Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) is an election watchdog in the country and had been vociferously in support of the 19th and 20th Amendments to the Constitution.

“A number of MPs, including National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa, questioned the qualifications of the three nominated civil members to the CC, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, Dr. Radhika Coomarswamy and A.W.A. Salam,” Tennakoon said.

“These are Parliamentarians who haven’t even passed their Advanced Levels in school,” he said.

Tennakoon said that with the failure of Parliament to come to a consensus on the three civil members, the activities of the Bribery Commission and the appointment of the Elections Commissioner have come to a standstill. (DS)

No wonder,we can see how they are behaving in the Parliament, and the Speaker and his deputies cannot control them.May be they both are also belongs to this lot .Otherwise they should have the courage to oust some of these thugs from the Parliament. These thugs have forgotten that we are the people who are feeding them, their families, their misstresses etc. etc. .We have done this mistake always and this time we will learn all of them a lesson. If the selection commities of the parties do not select the correct persons the people of this country must teach a lesson to all these parties so that they will not repeat it in future.

Read the comments. Every thing this country is treated as a joke. This is not a joke 94 idiots have not got through even O Levels.1994 not having A Levels. No wonder this country is in a mess.Even to become a peon you have to have a minimum qualification. Political parties and the people should getogether to change this situation. Parties amond/between them should come an agreement on basic requirements to give nominations. People should start a mass movement to pressurise the political parties to give nominations to the qualified and vote at the elctions for such candidates only. Most of the present guys should languish in prisons not in the Parliament and continue to ruine this country. Lets get together fulfill this national responsibility without making the whole thing joke. Let be responsible citizens who will leave some worthwhile things for the future generations.

For them lying is the best qualification they deny allegations although it is obvious that they have ill-gotten wealth

We cannot get a decent job without good qualifications - so how come these under-qualified ruffians end up in parliament? There are loads of poor, decent, genuine and patriotic graduates looking for employment - but they cannot compete with the money flow of mudalalis, drug and ethanol dealers. This is the reality.

Well done CAFFE for publicly highlighting the educational deficiency in our electoral system, with still no minimal qualification required to enter Parliament. It will take time, but certainly has got voters thinking?!

    Caira Friday, 12 June 2015 01:10 PM

If your parents can afford it is easy to get Diploma ,degrees and even post graduate qualifications from most foreign universities without proper school certificates It good to check the qualifications of people who make these kind of remarks. I am sure Sri Lankans can make good judgment on policies and principals without O/L

    Amila Friday, 12 June 2015 11:41 AM

Are you waiting for your O/L results? Now you can fallow a degree programe at SLIIT. Now the Law college and the SLIIT going to be the degree generating machines?

    Ceylonese Friday, 12 June 2015 11:30 AM

Are all qualified people educated? Education is vast, qualification is just passing the examination, people can be educated even without a qualification, I think 5% for the national list of the law makers should be selected as how the jurors are selected from the community randomly. that is my humble opinion.

    Boonda Friday, 12 June 2015 11:27 AM

By the way who would bell the Cat?. North or South: A common issue to all MP.

The God Father Friday, 12 June 2015 11:24 AM

Not only we need to have minium qualifications for the Political contestants but also them to be with high morals, there should be a way to measure whether the qualifications are legitimate, these days people can get a doctorate for few hundred dollars. On the other hand, dont you think politicians like ww and jokers give us a chance to appreciate our educated politicians?

    polished Friday, 12 June 2015 11:01 AM

Why is weerawanse still at large,, he should be in Jail and the key thrown away, like all UPFA looters and thugs

    Riz Friday, 12 June 2015 10:42 AM

this z the fate our country. Most of the MPs should be street vendors , but now in the Parliament doing what vendors are in streets.

    Harry Friday, 12 June 2015 09:44 AM

Results on the Curse of MANAAPE system

    Truth Friday, 12 June 2015 09:36 AM

Nothing to worry. Even without an O/L someone could get an MSc by doing nothing at SLIIT.

King Cobra Friday, 12 June 2015 08:10 AM

    Then why was this accommodated?

    Reggie Thursday, 11 June 2015 05:33 PM

    Veda-mama Friday, 12 June 2015 05:19 AM

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT YOU BELONG TO THE CATEGORY OF WATER-BUFFALOES.

    dot Friday, 12 June 2015 02:50 AM

very true ..if it is desirable that all voters should be educated then the government should make it happen .

King Kong Thursday, 11 June 2015 07:45 PM

So do you recommend Indian model for SL?

    Maya Thursday, 11 June 2015 06:37 PM

These guys would not have been selected in first pass the poll system. By political influence they put their name in the list and proportional system and others hard work make these guys to sit as MPs. Thats why they block the changing the election rules.

    Ralahami Thursday, 11 June 2015 06:27 PM

It is rumoured that there are that half a dozen MP have not even passed their third grade. Then there are some who have not gone beyond their O/L but later were able to join the Law College using their status as MPs. Some such have even gone to hold the highest political office in the country. One should note that all the presidents of India were university graduates and the majority have experience from being university professors.

    citizen a Thursday, 11 June 2015 06:24 PM

Can a normal citizen get a decent job with out o/l or a/l?its high time to set a minimum qualification level for this so called people representatives.

    Manel Thursday, 11 June 2015 05:53 PM

It was rumoured that even some of the fellows of previous Govt. did not have A/Levels even though they had entered Law College using their status as members of parliament.

Sri Lankan Thursday, 11 June 2015 05:35 PM

Thanks for highlighting this matter and it is better if the Sri Lankan society can continue an extended dialogue on this subject especially in view of the forthcoming election.

    das Thursday, 11 June 2015 05:35 PM

Unfortunately, most voters are without even O/Ls.
