President Mahinda Rajapaksa speaking at the opening of the “Rajadhani Road’ in Anuradhapura said he believed that it was time to amend the traffic laws pertaining to speeding and that motorist should be allowed to drive faster.

“The laws against speeding are outdated. People should be allowed to drive faster because the roads in the country are developed to high standards,” he said. (Sanjeewa Ratnayeka)

President you are welcome, By considering the condition of Road, Quality of Vehicles and the value of technological, speed limit must be revised according to time and road conditions. For an example on highways, after 9 pm till 5 Am light vehicles could be permitted to 90 to 100 Km/h. During daytime It can be 70 km/h.

I guess on certain roads the speed limit could be increased beyond 70kmph. Having said that our most motorist have no clue of road rules and are reckless..further pedestrians too use the road as if it is their backyard. This combination is a deadly receipe.

This is a matter for the Motor Trafic Dept. Speeds must be determined by the standard of the roads. At junctions it must be mandatory to momentarily stop the vehicle as in the USA to prevent 2 cars aproaching a junction from 2 diferent roads not trying to beat the other. An aproacing car must give way to the one aproching on the right.
