The Police Department is planning to take a number of steps this year to increase its efficiency and move closer to the public by introducing a number of people friendly initiatives under the directions of Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakone.
The police department plans to connect all the police stations via the internet to enhance the exchange of data and to provide information to the general public.
It also plans to start a service where the public can pay fines for violating traffic laws via SMS.
Special attention will be given this year to police promotions and transfers according to the guidelines mentioned in the Public Services Commission.
As a rise in road accidents were detected last year, a special programme will be implemented for motorists and pedestrians by the traffic police in order to build awareness. The police will take steps to combat organised crimes thereby being able to curb criminal activities.
IGP Illangakone also said that the CCTV cameras will be modernised so as to identify individuals (Automated facial recognition) and to identify vehicle numbers (Automated number plate recognition).
Training and educational facilities for policemen will be strengthened this year to create a professional police service in the country. These vital steps were mentioned by the police chief in his New Year message to the public and the police. (Supun Dias)

Above is welcome but the curse of the country today is the lawlessness of politiciens and henchman and the impotence of the police take action against them. Correct action will certainly raise the credibility of the police.Local political crooks controlling the police is partly to blame,

Existing Civil Security Committees is seen like political agenda must be turn with Com. policing. And also there are no knowledge of authorities of CSC officers regarding Com. Policing. Pl. check this situation. Traffic; Pl. check the status of Driving schools position. And prepare standard Traffic Hand Book similar to Canada. Thank you.

Why do not arrange a TV and Radio campaign to educate road users. As this is not a difficult task, but very effective.

Good move ,keep it up, please implement some computerized system in all police stations for maintaining data, to save public time as well as police officers time, i think it is much convenient than pulling files for simply to provide a report
Thank you

You mean : no more white vans, no further deaths inside police stations, no "encounter killings" of suspects, no raping of women inside cells, no threats to drivers and their companions at night and forcefully taking their money and harassing their female partners????????

A good first step would be to stop taking money off the public for imagined infractions.
