A 39 year old mother from the area of Kelaniya had attempted to poison her three children between the ages 15, 11 and 6, before consuming the poison herself, police sources say.

According to reports, the mother and her three children had been taken to the Narahenpita hospital for treatment once it was made clear that a poisonous substance was in their systems.

Police investigation had later revealed that it was the mother that had administered the poison to her children before taking some herself.

The reason behind the attempted poisoning, that took place last evening,  has not yet been uncovered.

Peliyagoda Police are conducting investigations. (RR)

Lots of people can't even afford to buy food ... but this is not being spoken of, in public, as people are ashamed. This is another serious problem we have here. Our people try to cover-up livelihood problems, fearing social stigma. This shouldn't be so. Let's speak the truth. Aren't we all affected in one way or another? Maybe this mother had difficulty in feeding her children? I suspect this is why it is claimed that the reason for this is not known yet.

How do these mothers get poisonous substances, won't the police investigate and file cases on the sellers without prescription?
