Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena who visited the Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Borella today was left in a rather embarrassing situation when the elevator he was in, was stuck for 15 minutes.

The Minister had attempted to get to the 9th floor of the hospital but found the door would not open. He was brought down to the 8th floor but officials found the entrance was blocked. The entrance was later cleared and the Minister was escorted out of the elevator and through the surgery room. (Ranjan Kasthuri)

It is good for them to feel the pain of the ordinary citizen and this sort of thing must happen often. Not only on lifts but during traffic jams, power failures, water cuts etc. to keep them in touch with reality, because right now all of them are on cloud nine!

    Roshan Thursday, 30 December 2010 07:03 AM

What will happen if they had taken a emergency case in that lift, the patient will end up at mortuary.

ministers should talk less and do more ! they should also make surprise visits to their offices and see the real situation.

Good that Mr. minister himself had to experience this.Otherwise nobody knows. Before boasting ,look at how your ministry is working in all aspects. If not poor mass would be the victims.

    hewa Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:35 PM

Of course the superviser or the safety manager if there was one should fire immediately.no body should keep any objects blocking doors.this the simple safety methods.if those officers dont know it.they are not suitable for the job.

    hewa Wednesday, 29 December 2010 04:31 PM

This is called inefficiency of the goverment officers even they are offered to bring dutyfree vehicles. It is not allowed to keep any objects in front of any doors. What about a lift door.Even it is a main hospital.Where was the safety officer or building supervisor? Minister should not take this simply.he must find the people responcible and fire them out.

This should happen more often to ministers...now instead of fixing the elevator, they will fire the supervisor.
