The Health Ministry’s Food Advisory Committee decided to test more samples of milk powder imported from New Zealand to check whether any harmful chemicals were in it, informed sources said.

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the Health Ministry today with the participation of its Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala
The Agriculture Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeyawrdana told Parliament last week that people should refrain from consuming imported milk powder as it contained harmful chemicals.

He said it had been found that dangerous chemicals had got into the milk through a pesticide sprayed in New Zealand. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Need to make sure this is not a unreasonable SPS requirement that is being brought up to stop the imports and boost local production with the consumers having to pay for short-sighted political decisions.
