The Election Department a short while ago confirmed that the voter turnout for the local government polls, which is currently underway, was considerably low in all parts of the country.

“The voter turnout was considerably low in all parts of the country with a little improvement in Hambantota,” Deputy Elections Commissioner W.P.Suamanasiri told Daily Mirror online.

Meanwhile, independence  election monitoring bodies said that by noon the voter turnout was between 20% to 25%.

Both the PAFFREL and Network for Election Monitoring said in spite of the low enthusiasm among voters, there was a sharp increase in the number of incidents of election related violence. (Sandun Jayasekera)
