The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) which earlier opposed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution had decided to extend full support for the 19th and 20th Amendments to the Constitution, party General Secretary Patali Champika Ranawaka said today at a media briefing held in Battaramulla.

He said the current 19th Amendment that would amend the key powers vested with the Executive Presidency, was not the amendment presented to the Parliament on March 13.

He said the Amendment, where omissions for the sections required referendum, had been tabled according to the Supreme Court verdict.

“The 19th Amendment is an achievement of the JHU and 20th too, which aimed at electoral reforms. We extend our full support to the government to pass the amendments and it is a responsibility of all the political parties to vote for the amendments,” Ranawaka said.

He said some parties were expected to create chaos in Parliament by taking up issues about questioning Parliamentarians, when the 19th Amendment is taken up tommorrow (27). (Piyumi Fonseka)

The biggest challenge is that opposition politicians look at 19th and the 20th amendments as opportunities to bash UNP. If they want to keep RW and his UNP out of power, then use the next general election for that purpose but support these amendments without placing road blocks.

Let those who are creating chaos to do what ever they like. The people of this country showed them the peoples power and will do it again if a election comes. These thugs should be dealt properly. The BC and the CCID has the right to question anyone in this country and if they have not done anything wrong they will be free and who are convicted will sit in Welikada. We will urge the government to amend the regulations of MP s who are sent to jail should go behind bars and not in the Hiospital. If they get sick there should be three Medical experts to decide whether the person in question is sick or not and it should be unanimous .

Good that Helaurumaya now at least have opened their eyes and has come forward to fully co-operate and vote for the 19th Amendment without any condition which is commendable.
