Two Chennai-bound women from Kollupitiya were arrested at the BIA this morning while trying to smuggle out 22 gold slabs carrying them in their handbags. Customs officials said the contraband was valued at more than Rs. four million.

The women aged 32 and 42 had said they sold the gold in India and brought in textiles from India. Further investigations are continuing. (Deepa Adikari)

I hate this. Everything Taxed. Their money their gold. Why should gov arrest? They didn't steal. It's business. In Some countries no taxes on import and export.

If I can get a good for low price in abroad why can't I import it without paying bulk taxes. Allow Indian textiles without tax. Then Business gangsters here have to reduce their prices.

Can't you see the difference between business and smuggling? What ever anyone carrier across the border, they have to declare them. It's the same at any country. Anything not declared are treated as smuggled goods. If your theory is correct, then anyone could even take archeological artifacts without declaring and sell them abroad and bring drugs freely and sell them here.

may be they should ask this type question on immigration form, i don't remember seeing custom declaration form on departure . did any one seen it ?

I feel it is a good thing to nab smugglers at the Airport. If such action is not taken, the so-called smugglers will, will get out of hand.

4 million worth gold taken out of the country need to be declared and 4 million worth foreign currency not declared is not a offence?
Is law is the same among all Srilankans?
