Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ajith P. Perera said today that European Union (EU) had reimposed the ban on the LTTE due to the positive diplomatic intervention of the Government.
Mr. Perera said the EU court had lifted the ban on the LTTE during the previous government due to its ineffective diplomatic process.
He said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had written to the EU to reconsider the ban on the LTTE as the then leader of the opposition.
Mr. Perera said Prime Minister Wickremesinghe and the Foreign Affairs Ministry intervened with the EU to reimpose the ban on the LTTE and as a result, the EU had reimposed the ban and added that it was a great diplomatic victory of the country.
The Judgement of the General Court of the European Union last year had annulled measures taken by the Council of the European Union to designate the LTTE as a terrorist organisation and the freezing of their funds.

These successive governments are still dragging the Tamil peoples feet

Sad to see how little our so called Deputy Foreign Minister understands of the EU sanctioning. The listing of the terrorist groups including the LTTE is an automatic process done every 6 months by the Council of the European Union, irrespective of any lobbying by the parties affected. This is an internal process amongst the Member States only and even though Sri Lanka is primarily affected, Sri Lanka is not consulted in anyway....The judgement which lifted the ban on the LTTE is a separate matter. This was by the Court of First instance of the European Court of Justice. The Council of the European Union has lodged an appeal against the lifting of the ban and it is still pending. The decision is not likely for number of months still. No one can intervene or influence this process either...So please can someone educate our Foreign Ministers and Prime Minister of how these EU institutions work as they should take care not to misguide the people of Sri Lanka

EU anyway is influenced by Tamil diaspora and they did not even look at us when we were brutally terrorised for 30 years due to very weak leaders and governments in Sri lanka and weak international public relations but LTTE paid money and hosted meals to speak against SL. We must thank Rajapakse and all involved not dancing to EU tune and commend Ravinath for a massive voice and a representation on behalf of SL and its people

Ranil asks EU to ban LTTE and Mangala is asking to recognize the LTTE backed Organizations and offer dual citizenship to their members.

According to my knowledge EU never lifted the ban on the ĹTTE. They were talking about realising some of the frozen asetettes due to the pressure of the tamil diaspora. I find your comments are not very true.

This is very good news for all the peace loving people of Sri Lanka. The current Govt. deserves all the cerdit for this great achievement . This goes to show that this Govt. has taken positive action to counter the anti-Sri Lankan activities of the LTTE diaspora in a more concrete and constructive way than the previous Govt. Hope our diplomatic personnel will be more vigilant in future in order to counter such vicious action of the LTTE diaspora.

Not only Tamil feet, the governments are dragging all Sri Lankans feet, and only filling their own pockets.

We as a Family in SriLanka living with peace and harmony with all communities, except the Northern Tamils. It is the TNA, the nasty Pro-LTTE is creating un-wanted problems. Hope hereafter they change their bad attitudes and come into the right track.

Good news for all Srilankans including Sinhalese, Tamils
Horri Jimonis Sunday, 29 March 2015 05:08 AM
In SriLanka - Colombo Tamils, Up-country Tamils are unitedly living with Sinhalese. Only in Jaffna, the TNA is creating divisions for their selfish attitudes. They are just acting to survive pacifying the poor Jaffna Tamils. How long they could cheat them?
Vijith Pieterz Sunday, 29 March 2015 05:09 AM
Very good blow to TNA..... atleast now they should shut their dirty mouths and co-operate with the present Government.
Kiris Baba Amaray Sunday, 29 March 2015 05:11 AM
Like LTTE, please arrange to ban BBS Sir.

Good move, why the delay in arresting the worst culprit Weerawansa who robbed the Housing Ministry in the past regime. Why no action against his wife yet?

Speed action by EU its a good news. But very very slow action by the Present Govt. to take action against noted culprits WW, Aluthgamage etc.,

RW as PM is an expert n very efficient in handling diplomatic n international affairs. Domestic and party issues are the problems. Like this pls bring all the rogues to court n put them behind bars pls. This includes TB matter as well. Only then you will get our votes at the next election.

Deep roots Sunday, 29 March 2015 07:09 AM
Excellend decision. Why is that the EU goes back and forth on this decision. Who are considered terrorists and a threat to a nation cannot be good over night. Stop the illegal activities of LTTE made by the pro LTTE scavengers.
dilip Saturday, 28 March 2015 05:34 PM
Mr.Perera please read the Asian Tribune .Your F.M. Mr.Mangala says that the president wants to legalise the LTTE, and it has taken all the Tamils and the Sinhelese by surprise.
Nimal Sunday, 29 March 2015 08:27 AM
Good! Reverse all the wrongdoings of the previous regime!
karu Saturday, 28 March 2015 06:42 PM
Correct decision.Good decision. Terrorists are always terrorists with or without arms
Ag Sunday, 29 March 2015 12:00 PM
This clearly shows that EU had an issue with MR and not the country
Mahakalusinhalaya Saturday, 28 March 2015 08:06 PM
Is the EU is so silly to decide that LTTE should be ban until Sri Lanka’s opposition leader asks to ban it in EU?

BuffaloaCitizen Saturday, 28 March 2015 08:41 PM
No doubt the foreign ministry under Rajapakse regime was basically nothing else than a brothel including the learned senile GL, nodding to everything the regime wanted him to nod. The reason EU is supporting SL now is not bcos that the present regime is pro-west, but simply bcos they are working towards humanitarian issues

GOOD JOB , KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK OF THE NEW REGIME , CURSE TO THE PREVIOUS REGIME , THAT CHANGED THE SRI LANKA IMAGE IN THE HISTORY WITH DICTATOR RULE AND WITH DAY LIGHT ROBBERY OF ALL ASSESTS OF SRI LANKA
