Cabinet has approved the construction of an electric train service between Veyangoda and Panadura, Internal Transport Minister Ranjith Maddumabandara today said.

Mr. Maddumabandara said the construction of the electric train service would be done in cooperation with the Railway Department, Ceylon Electricity Board and the Internal Transport Ministry.

He added that the Cabinet Proposal to construct a monorail system linking Colombo to the suburbs was being studied, and the ministry was awaiting approval to commence it.

He said Cabinet approval had also been granted to purchase 160 railway coaches, 18 power set trains and 30 tankers. (Ajith Siriwardana)

The people are still living under the poverty line. Can SL afford a train like this even if it is an old one?

    Pathirana Monday, 22 June 2015 10:34 AM

We have to improve our transport service. So this is a good idea of way to start.

The photo in the article shows a Bombardier A-city train built in Australia. Is the government planning on buying trains from a Australian/European country or would we have to settle for crap from India or China(CNR/CSR) or is the train photo part of a larger conspiracy?

Dear all,Recently i traveled from CMB to Polgahawela by train and just I wanted to go to toilet then i tried to go Veyangoda station toilet as train had a long stop there, the hygiene and cleanses is not for human use,its like hell and not cleaned and at all and i couldnt bear the bad smell and i run away without doing my part never ever wish to have even a look at those toilets again ,Hence when I was coming back I just checked all the main railway stations toilets conditions and found all are same and nothing is suitable for human use,So I beg and request from all concerned to make a way to provide a better sanitary facility at all railway stations and make a proper way to maintain high standards for human use rather then wasting money on this type of shit as we still can use the normal train service as of now.

The government should go ahead fast as there are people who try to spread false rumors saying they have stopped development etc.

we have seen all this happen in 100days in office.promises before the elections. Most of the previous govts projects on hold or stoppedgive more concessions,,increase wages, reduce petrol.and go home after 100 days .Is that it?

    Sikuru Saturday, 20 June 2015 02:32 PM

It is totally understandable that MR fans will not be able to take these developments so they resort to insults

    OMG Saturday, 20 June 2015 01:28 PM

Better to leave the existing lines as it is and use the money to make a monorail network to connect the busy areas so that we will not need to use vehicles like in Kuala Lumpur.

If Mara was there the cost of electric train would be double the cost of a sky train.

    Damien Saturday, 20 June 2015 12:32 PM

This government has started a fass in order to fool the people into believing that development work would continue.

    Sunil Saturday, 20 June 2015 12:21 PM

I think Japan is the best when it comes to electric train technology. might be a good idea to work with them to implement this project.
