A court in the northern Dutch city of Zwolle has sentenced three people to prison for attempting to smuggle a child out of Sri Lanka to the Netherlands using false documentation.

The chief suspect, a woman from the town of Stegeren, was sentenced to 189 days' imprisonment. She was considered the driving force behind the crime. Her ex-boyfriend was sentenced to 134 days. An accomplice who helped provide the false documents was sent to prison for six days.

The judge handed down a higher sentence on the woman and her ex-boyfriend than the Public Prosecutor had demanded. The court noted that the two had been already been imprisoned for eight weeks following an earlier attempt at an illegal adoption. After their release they began a new attempt to smuggle a child from Sri Lanka to the Netherlands. (Radio Netherlands Worldwide)

It is no wonder the foreigners think that they can come here and do whatever they want, this is the message passed to the world by the masses who supported Norway intervention to the peace process and America, Norwar and British intervention to stop an ongoing war. The learned judge has rightly passed on a message to the case at hand, while MR is doing the same at a higher political level.

But how good is it for the deprived child? Back to the poverty and hunger in sunny Sri lanka.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 09:42 AM

They were only trying to help the child's family.

6 days 134 days 189 days imprisonment that too for a repeat offence- Is this a sentence or encouragement? After the sentence they may try another attempt?!

Sanjeeva, what makes you think the child would have had a better life in Netherlands. There are children smuggled for prostitution and other purposes, so beware.

Sri lanka's pride Hikaduwa, Bentota, aluthgama, Narigama etc.
how many Beach boys are groomed by their own parents, How many sri lankan children resemble non sri lankan looks. For Money we were willing to do anything.

If you guys are so patriotic can we stop sending our women to Middle east & in malaysia where they are treated like dogs, can we stop sex tourism, can we prosecute a single tourist from a western country, or even talk about any of these publicly. Even today in our coastal area you can see foreigners are playing with our boys.
We have the so called Sahodarayas, Verrayas Dhutugamunus and all kinds of parayas but not one man in sri lanka has the courage to openly talk or protest.

that child may be better of there than in sl starving & working as a beach boy here.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:25 PM

My opinion is that the child would be better-off, outside Sri Lanka.

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 07:47 PM

    "Mekka" theory !

    Wednesday, 17 February 2010 08:55 PM

That child and all other children would be better-off in any other country. Sri Lanka is only good for the children of the 'clan.' They can get anything they wish ...
