Cleaning schools a must

Reserving half an hour off two days each week to clean school grounds and classrooms has been made compulsory in every school by a circular 2010/22 issued today by the Education Ministry to prevent the spread of Dengue.

Education Ministry Secretary Sunil S. Sirisena said, “It is important for the schools to contribute to prevalent National Dengue prevention programs that are being carried out throughout the country.”

Speaking further he pointed out that as the rainy season triggers mosquito breeding rate, it is essential for the school administrations to ensure that school grounds as well as the surrounding environment is kept clean and free of mosquito breeding grounds.

The circular has also addressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment in schools as well as other educational institutions such as National Colleges and Education offices whilst maintaining proper waste management systems.

The circular expresses the importance of implementing a system where students obtain the opportunity to educate their communities regarding Dengue prevention. Additionally, each school is also advised to appoint a committee to look into the dengue prevention activities of the school.

What has happened to BTI that the Minister of health proudly announced had been negotiated free of charge from Cuba? Why is their pin drop silence on eradicating the dengue menace using BTI?

Manjula, You all speak of Singapore city being so clean. They learn't this from their school age. so why can't Sri Lankans do the same.

We did not have circulars during our school days. We cleaned our classroom and school premises on our own, taking turns.

It was our principal and teachers that motivated us in this. Most of the persent day teachers and principals lack such vision or motivation.

I remember back at school in singapore, we used to have a period off every two weeks or so to clean up the school area, and it counted as community service hours into our reports.

dear all, we won't eradicate dengue until we all learn how to live clean without throwing garbage irresponsibly. BTI only a supplymentary method. All countries who were able to control dengue have good systems of garbage disposal. Manjula, I don't see anything wrong letting school children to clean their premises, as adults we have failed. Let them to learn live clean.

I THINK ITS UPTO THE SCHOOL TO DRAW UP THIER OWN ROSTER . ANYWAY ITS A EXCELLENT MANDOTORY GOVERNMENT STATEMENT .SINCE WE ALSO LEARNT AND HANGING ON TO THIS EXCELLENT HABIT FOR LIFE WHICH WE LEARNT FROM THE SCHOOL .AUTOMATICALLY OUR CHILDREN WOULD ALSO FOLLOW SO

Have a MOSQUITO & FLIES ERADICATION CAMPAIGN - like what we had years and years ago to eradicate the bug menace - where the government sought assistance from the Lions Club & Rotary, and we had a shramadana by all schoolchilren and institutions - private and government. It was known then as the BUG ERADICATION CAMPAIGN.
