The Ceylon Tobacco Company (CTC) said today the price of some brands of cigarettes would be increased by Rs.1 while the others would be increased by Rs.2 from midnight today.

These punitive taxes serve no purpose other than to bring more money into the coffers of the treasury of the county--whence do they go? It is the same in all countries--we need money, we tax the drinkers of alcohol and smokers of tobacco. And what is bidi and ra? Oh, cannot touch them because they are long-standing traditions in the Island's traditions.

It doesn't increase by 10 because government is fear of stopping it and this is only piracy.
