Australia will support Sri Lanka both politically and technically for the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) next year, visiting Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr assured today.

“Australia will be at the Commonwealth Summit next year and will provide Sri Lanka with the technical assistance necessary for a successful summit,” he said.

When asked whether Australia will support Sri Lanka in the face of Canadian pressure not to attend the summit here, the minister said Canada needed to engage with Sri Lanka on issues of human rights.

“There needs to be engagement with Sri Lanka by way of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commissions (LLRC) report to resolve any issues it may have with regards to human rights. As far as engagement with Sri Lanka is concerned the LLRC is the best instrument,” Mr. Carr said. (Dianne Silva) (Pix by Pradeep Dilrukshana)

    Don't shout later ok?

    CEEDEEBEE Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:42 AM

I thought they had done just that now.Hopping around making stupid statements. I am all for any country who supports Sri Lanka Technically, But any country who supports Politically against their 'home standards and belief' are simply playing games for their own hidden agenda. In this case I think Australia are hoping to get a bite of the sea oil contracts.

    Hybiscus Tuesday, 18 December 2012 01:48 AM

Terrific move, Bob. The Canadian whinging and posturing and threatening over the November 2013 CHOGM has been completely unacceptable and has clearly been fuelled by the LTTE rump in that country. Great move here on Australia's part to support a SL CHOGM on a political level.
Auspicious time to now really start cementing SL-OZ relationships economically, educationally and governmentaly. Hey, maybe even time to get a few direct flights to and from these two lovely countries? Good idea, eh?

THANK YOU AUSTRALIA. At last at least one western nation
has realised that SriLanka is NOT the agressor in our fight against the LTTE and its sympathizers. Canada should learn by Australia's example.
