Right-handers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah cracked half-centuries laying the foundation for Afghanistan to ease to a six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first ODI played at the Sooriyawewa Stadium today.
Zadran made a run-a-ball 98 which had 11 boundaries and two sixes while Shah made 55 in 80 balls with three boundaries.
The pair came together when Afghanistan lost their first wicket with 25 runs on the board, going on to share a match winning 146-run stand for the second wicket.
That partnership meant that those followed were able to bat with little to no pressure, with Shah sharing another 40-run stand for the fourth wicket with Hashatullah Shahidi.
Shahidi then put on a 42-run partnership with Mohammed Nabi for the fourth wicket, taking Afghanistan to within inches of the win.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka, invited to take first lease of the wicket, lost their top four batsmen with 84 runs on the board in the 20th over, before Charith Asalanka and Dhananjaya de Silva came to the rescue.
The pair put in stiff resistance, posting their 50-run stand in 61 balls before taking Sri Lanka to 150 in the 32nd over.
They reached their respective half tons, with Asalanka making it first in 57 balls and de Silva in 56 deliveries.
De Silva did not last long after though, as right arm spinner Mohammad Nabi made the breakthrough, ending a valuable 99 run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Skipper Dasun Shanaka who joined Asalanka put on a stand of 32 runs for the sixth wicket which followed with Asalanka sharing another valuable 48 runs stand for the seventh with debutant Dushan Hemantha – Sri Lanka at that stage on 263 for 7 in the 49th over.
The hosts lost two quick wickets in the last over with the score on 264 that included Asalanka who hit 91 in 95 balls that included 12 boundaries before being bowled out for 268 runs.

SLC board to blame and government inaction to blame Friday, 02 June 2023 07:04 PM
Government seems hapless to stop the rot in Sri Lankan cricket. SLC has even roped in the ICC to rebuff the government from uprooting corruption in SLC. Nothing good will happen for Sri Lanka, while the SLC runs cricket the way it does. Government better to have no more international cricket than to let situation slide to worse.

Please Please for the sake of the Country can the team of Selectors and the Captain take a step back and permit others who love the country to lead and select.

Poor team selection, poor coaching, poor captaincy and poor performance by seniors like Mathews and Captain himself. First they need to get a good coach as current coach does not seems to correct or help correct batting techniques. Same applies for his support staff. For example Dasun gets out to spin in similar ways always. Then when it comes to odi captaincy, Dasuns baller rotation and field setup are one of the worst things. Dasun is fine with T20 but not suitable for ODI. Also you need to have a test spinner like Prabath Jayasuriya to play a role like Herath as we have a serious issue in odi spin balling. Then Danajaya can play the second crusual role similar to Dilshan or Jayasuriya.

SL team clearly lacks the skills in both batting and bowling. The way AFG has improved over the years is amazing.

It was a tremendous performance by minnows Afghanistan who not only outplayed Sri Lanka in all departments of the game but also dominated the match fom start to finish to register one of the easiest of victories in the first ODI wining the match by 6 wickets with almost 4 overs to spare.

The game of cricket in SL must be revamped from Top to Bottom. It's a painful process, but to improve the standard of cricket in SL the change must take place. Otherwise we're only gonna win some games here and there but there'll be no consistency, and wining any ICC world CUPS. The immediate change should happen by removing the Selectors. It's not that SL have deficiency in talent, it's how selectors handling some players. The basic rule in selection process is Player with the specified attribute, whose value can be exactly the specified value to the team. I doubt the Selectors have any idea how the selection process works! That's the very reason why last 6-7 years SL team losing almost 70% of their white Ball cricket games!!

Kudos to Afghanistan no school big matches wonder any good schools to talk about no club matches no many grounds or stadiums then what clicked for this humble team. They actually started organised cricket in 1995 a year before Sri Lanka won the world cup. Sri Lanka was introduced to cricket by the so called Sudhas way back in early 19th century we must bow our heads for the players for their ever present determination and never say die attitudes. blaming everyone around not going to help. 100% players responsibility to deliver if not they must get out from the team. Bringing in test captains seniors etc not the solution

Winning and losing is part and parcel of any sport. But the kind of rot that has set into cricket administration and management in Sri Lanka is simply unfathomable. Just check and see whether any of the other cricketing nation has in their cricket boards individuals who have not played cricket at the highest levels or been part of national team. Trust Sri Lanka to be different........

Dasun Shanaka is not playing to his potential, should be removed from leadership and let someone positive take over. I feel his field settings are not attacking most of the time. Selectors are dumb founded. Why is Kasun Rajitha in the Team? A mediocre player. He gets a wicket here and there but not a impact player in match situations. Overall not a positive sign. We might not get qualified for this year's world cup. Sorry to say this

You cannot win all the time. Testing new players is a good move and an acid test. It is better to lose first and then improve. If the freshers taste victory, they will think they are on par. All is not lost. Let's hope they learn from their mistakes and perform better.

Obviously pathetic captaincy and poor team selection is the down fall. No team work. Credit to the crooks at SLC step by step destroy our Cricket. Open your eyes Hon Minister of Sports.

The biggest problem is that SL players don't speak English. So how do they communucate with the coching team. Thanks to Budhist Sinhala only politics from Bandaranayaka,
Too many old players like Matthews Saturday, 03 June 2023 09:12 PM
Too long our team relies on seniors, when it is the juniors who are the real talent. The seniors use their political and religious connections connections to stay in the team - example of such corruption is having Matthews a clearly too old player weighing down and ruining matches.
