The 1,260 sq. km Yala National Park will be expanded by another 27,185 hectares following the step taken by the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Conservation to designate the Lunugamwehera National Park as a wildlife zone belonging to the Yala National Park.
Minister Mahinda Amaraweera unveiled the plaque of Lunugamwehera National Park as Zone VI of Yala Park and named the park as a zone belonging to Yala National Park.
Lunugamwehera National Park which is rich in biodiversity and a major elephant migration route between Yala and Udawalawa consists of 27185.85h.
Also, the newly built Pahala Hentota Circuit Bungalow within the Yala National Park was also opened by the Minister on Friday.
The ministry said that the circuit bungalow also has the opportunity to watch bears that come at night.
Meanwhile, the Minister said that the government's decision to temporarily suspend the entry of private vehicles into the Yala Park will be revoked soon. (DSB)

These are good moves towards recognition and expansion of the wilderness, but the illicit activities like bush meat trade needs more stringent control and enforcement of the laws. Let's wait and see.

It seems to be a wise decision to expand the present extent of Yala national park. However the poaching is very frequent in Katharagama and Lunugamvehera areas.Certain hunters are illegally poaching the deers elks and wild boars. Therefore the high ranking officers of the wildlife department should take necessary steps to eliminate the issues pertaining to the illicit poaching

What increase? Merely joining two without a sufficient corridor? Swarnawahini mentioned that a part of Yala being cleared. The right authority must take immediate action to arrest the process and the culprits.
