While urging the government to withdraw the increased fuel price without burdening the people further who are already hit by the pandemic and loss of income, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today questioned as to why the 'Fuel Price Stabilisation Fund' was not utilised for the  benefit of the people.

JVP politburo member Sunil Handunnetti told a news conference that the government  established the said fund last year aiming to benefit the people during fuel price hikes in the world market.

He said the government was planning to raise Rs. 200 billion when the price of a barrel of crude oil dropped to as low as US$ 40 last year without passing that benefit to the people.

"We ask the government what happened to that Fund? Why is it not utilised at this critical juncture when people are suffering without any means to survive and prices of essential commodities have gone up unbrearably," he asked.

Mr. Handunnetti said the prices of essential commodities went up unusually due to travel restrictions and pandemic situation and pointed out that the situation would aggravate with the fuel price hike.

"Fuel price hike will affect all sectors resulting in the escalation of transport cost and bus fares as well. People cannot bear it right now. They are now feeling that they are thrown into the fire from the frying pan," he said. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Fuel prices are increasing around the world , even Saudi Arabia increased price

    Lion Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:03 PM

The bad side of this increase is ,when the world prices are decreasing the government never give that benefit to the consumer.

    Nadeesha Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:09 PM

The government has money to build highways, import luxury cars for MPs and Gem towers. Why raise fuel oil prices?

Ranil Fernando Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:05 PM

I wish this guy is here in Australia. He will stop rising fuel prices.

The JVP is querying why the fuel price stabilizing fund had not been used to mitigate the impact. Some people are just talking without reading

    PAUL Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:21 PM

JVP is the only political party which always stand on behalf of the people. We salute them.

Ronnie Bugger Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:29 PM

The man on the street will not give a damn if fuel prices may go through the roof but he will surely react when public transport prices, vegetables, fruits and even the 'karapincha', the cost to burn the ' kuppi lampuwa'and of course, 'chun paan' will start to be a strain on his or her pocket.

    Saman Saturday, 12 June 2021 02:46 PM

People should not politicize this issue.

    Disapointed Saturday, 12 June 2021 05:56 PM

Moorthy Badulla Saturday, 12 June 2021 07:59 PM

Everything seems to be out of control in and out of the country???????? Can raise the price. But this is not the right time when people are in big trouble.

    Sunil Saturday, 12 June 2021 08:09 PM

If a fund was set up, let's audit the fund to see whether price can be not increased using the funds. Also, JVP please drive your case with facts, figures and logic rather than just making statements.

    Saranga W Saturday, 12 June 2021 08:12 PM
