Welipe Suraj & army deserter arrested with heroin, swords

‘Welipe Suraj’ and an army deserter, who are two accomplices of underworld figure Sanjeewa Kumara alias ‘Makilangamuwe Sanjeewa’, had been arrested by the STF with heroin, three swords and an air riffle in Minuwangoda last night.

The STF said the suspects, G.D. Suraj alias ‘Welipe Suraj’ and H.M.D. Parakrama who is an army deserter, were arrested while travelling in a car.

The suspects aged 21 and 25 were handed over to the Minuwangoda Police.

The STF said that Welipe Suraj is on bail over a shooting incident in 2018 in which a 40-year-old woman was killed in Weligampitiya, Ja-Ela.

She was killed in a shooting in which Welipe Suraj fired at underworld figure Kalu Ajith.

They said the suspect is also wanted over soil mining rackets.

The raid was carried out by a team led by CI Nadeeka Silva on the instruction of STF Commandant.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
