Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran yesterday claimed rights to the Moragahakanda project as it supplied water to the Northern Province.

Chief Minister revealed these sentiments during a discussion with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) yesterday.  He added that there would be issues if the central government had full authority over the project.

“We are happy that water is from the Mahaweli River is being distributed to the North, we have no objection to that,” Vigneswaran said.

Meanwhile, officials from JICA said they could not intervene in the political matters of the country and directed the CM to take up the issue with the government. (Romesh Madushanka)

As a very senior government official who has now retired and over 75 years old, it is a fact the the Moragahanda Project was given the highest priority in the accelerated Mahaweli Programme as recommended by the United States Operation Mission (USOM) in their feasibility report. However I am personally aware that a very high Government Official who is no longer living informed me that he will never recommend to the Government at that time to go ahead with this project as water was to flow to the Irranamadu and eventually to the Giant's tanksMy contention is that if such action was taken by the Government at that time we would not have faced the LTTE civil war as the youth of the north and east would have been happy by cultivating their lands with access to irrigation and water from the Mahaweli. So is the fate our country has to face due to the action of state officials at high posts having racist ideas advising the Governments and continue to do so since the 1980's.!!!!!.

Luckily Mahaweli river doesnt flow from north to south. Otherwise Wiggie would have objected "northern" water been distributed into south.

What a warp-minded politician. I thought LTTE is dead.

There is nothing wrong in his statement. If the project includes northern province, NPC should be involved in that. Otherwise what is the point of having a provincial council?

Oh really. Actually no point it should be dissl;oved all the tamils should be packed off to the north to see how he ias going to handle that. Racist

    Ponraj Thursday, 28 July 2016 05:22 AM

Well said, Poor Lankan. I am aware about a high govt. official advised the then JR regime that, there is not enough water in Mahaweli to be sent to north. Let them (Jaffna people) dig their own wells for water?

    chandu Wednesday, 27 July 2016 03:13 PM

Honerable Cheap Minister thinks by making various claims he could get things done

King Mihiraj Wednesday, 27 July 2016 06:44 PM

Of course he is absolutely correct. GOSL should give him what he wants, I suggest giving him the full control of the dam. What's the big deal now ?

    Casanova Wednesday, 27 July 2016 06:52 PM

Wont this dude appreciate the fact that the Central Government is trying to give northern people water? Is he eyeing on 10%? I dont think he has any Jurisdiction over this Damn, I mean Deam. May be he should be given the authority to the water that is about to be ejected in to his territory, so he could earn about a rupee for every 100 litres. wow that will be lot of money.

    Jude Wednesday, 27 July 2016 07:16 PM

It doesn't matter who's idea or anything else!!?? Just get the project off the ground, and do the needful!!! There's absolutely no proper irrigation system in North!!! This project a boom to people in North!!!

    chaminda Wednesday, 27 July 2016 07:26 PM

Dear Wiggie, Now we know you as a real joker. You are almost quiet opposite to Jeyalaltha. One-day can become a talented movie star. How about that idea?.
