The United National Party (UNP) will appoint new organisers starting from May, this year, with focus on women and professionals representing various sectors, its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.
Addressing a meeting he had with lawyers at party headquarters Sirikotha, Mr. Wickremesinghe said the party will give priority to women, businessmen and other professionals as organisers.
“We also welcome lawyers if they are willing to come forward to represent our party,” he said.
“We will go for a re-organisation programme which is similar to one which was done prior to 1977 by the then UNP leader late President J. R Jayewardene. The UNP went through a broad re-organisation programme during that time giving priority to professionals and new faces,” he recalled.
He said the UNP will also start up a campaign to safeguard world heritage sites such as Sinharaja at both local and international levels. “It was the UNP government which declared Sinharaja forest as a reserved forest,” he said.(Yohan Perera)
