The UN and the US have expressed concern over the police shooting in Rambukkana during a protest by the residents over the rising cost of living and shortage of fuel where one person had been killed, and several others had been injured.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka, Hanaa Singer in a Twitter message said “Deeply concerned by reports of harm to protestors in #Rambukkana. Violence by any party involved hinders the rights of all peaceful protestors. Restricting the use of force to the minimum extent necessary is vital to protect citizens and their right to exercise fundamental freedoms.”
The US Ambassador in Sri Lanka Julie Chung also condemn violence and called for restraint in a Twitter message. She also called for a full and transparent probe into the incident.
The Twitter message said,“i am deeply saddened by the horrible news coming out of Rambukkana. I condemn any violence whether against protestors or police - and call for restraint & calm from all sides. A full, transparent investigation is essential & the people’s right to peaceful protest must be held."

The patience of the people is now at an end. I suspect that Gota and his clan will not survive this incident.

When the poor are deprived of their means of survival without food, transport and other essentials what else can they do other than protest.

Sad to know protestors were shot at by the police and one killked. Protestors should take precaution that they should not damage government property or block roads that are used for transport of citizens and goods. They should also not allow opponents to infiltrate peaceful demonstrations allowing police to resort to shooting.

Sometimes force is a necessary evil as our protestors showed in 87. They must be informed that others too have the right to free movement, access to necessities just like their right to protest.

It is learnt that protestors who were without arms were chased down and shot at by the police who were ordered to kill!

Reply to Jude: the international court in The Hague does not kidnap persons, like they do in your country. Not even criminals like the Rajapaksa's. They need the co-operation of the legal system in Sri Lanka. That will be a challenge, I suppose.
