The imposition of travel restrictions would be the only solution to contain COVID-19 in short term, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) said.
SLMA Vice President Consultant Endocrinologist Dr. Manilka Sumanatilleke, said the Sri Lanka is almost in the fourth wave and added the country would plunge into a catastrophic situation if pertinent measures are not taken at correct time.
“It should be noted that the virus spreads faster than our vaccination drive. Hence, we need to subtract this gap. For that, the only option is to impose travel restrictions in short term,” he stressed.
“The authorities must pay special attention to the current situation and take immediate steps to address the crisis,” Dr. Sumanatilleke added.
Meanwhile, considering the increase in COVID deaths, he said it’s like three are dying from the virus every one hour as far as the 82 deaths reported yesterday (4) are concerned.
“This is an alarming situation and it’s nothing, but the truth that the contribution of the contagious Delta variant has also led to the sharp rise in deaths and infections,” he added.
The SLMA Vice President proceeded to say that the capacity in wards in hospitals where COVID patients are treated, have reached their maximum capacity. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

We had travel restrictions during the recent lockdown but the Covid cases then kept on increasing proving that method of containing the virus simply does not work. Our only hope is to pray to God and beg of Him to remove this calamity

Lockdown is not the solution even during lock down and immediately after it the numbers kept increasing. It will only hit the economy and cause bigger problems only for a short term gain. The people have to be more responsible rather than point at the government for the spread

Without lockdown people may die due to Covid only, but with lockdown people may die due to Covid and also due to starvation.

As Colin pointed out we had a lockdown before and the cases still kept increasing the same way!! Lockdown is not the solution, lockdown is for the lazy ones who want to just do nothing and wait,.. adhere more strictly to health regulations, wearing of masks, and social distancing, which are still not followed properly
