Finance Minister Ali Sabry said yesterday his office had started initial consultations on the increase of fiscal revenue from the present 8.5 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 13-14 percent.

The Minister told Daily Mirror that it is difficult to run a country with such a low tax revenue base as a percentage of the GDP.

“We have not made a final decision yet. But, we believe there should be a general tax increase,” he said.(Kelum Bandara)

What the hell you are still waiting. People are suffering. Now you say it is difficult to run a country with lower tax rates. Who did reduce it, it was done by your idiotic bosses in 2019/20 periods.

    Anu Saturday, 30 April 2022 08:56 AM

    Steal that extra money too

    Dado Saturday, 30 April 2022 08:57 AM

Then why did you cut taxes? You can't increase taxes after crashing the economy

Sri Wickrema Saturday, 30 April 2022 09:10 AM

Your President made a blunder by slashing and scraping various types of taxes arbitrarily. Now our economy is at sixes and sevens. And the people are facing severe hardship. But not a single word of regret came from your big boss. .

Billionaire Businessman Saturday, 30 April 2022 09:11 AM

Cut all unnecessary state expences, useless Over-time payments (when nobody is actually at work), reduce overstuffed departments, cut all MP privileges before increasing taxes in a already burdened economy!

    Chris Saturday, 30 April 2022 11:27 AM

In developed countries people are happy to pay taxes which are sometimes as high as 40% , knowing that the tax money works for the benefit of the country and for them. But in SL people do not get any benefit by paying taxes and thus the reluctance and tax dodging.

The cronies who benefited by the tax cuts in 2019 wouldn't have retained the huge profits in SriLanka but would have sent to their secret Accounts abroad. Hence no Dollars in Sri Lanka.

Philip de silva Saturday, 30 April 2022 11:36 AM

Is your boss taking the responsibility for all money lost for lowering the taxes???

Buvaneka Goonerstnr Saturday, 30 April 2022 11:50 AM

    joshua Saturday, 30 April 2022 11:58 AM

only shows the tax cut in 2019 was for election purpose. Since then country has suffered due to the mismanagement by bunch of idiots. Also, Sabry what were you doing all these days? Only after you are appointed as the finance minister you have woken up?

    Decentgent Saturday, 30 April 2022 12:01 PM

First you and other Ministers n MPs set an example to scrap the salaries n other perks enjoyed by you all. Now the citizens have to suffer for the blunders your boss, PM n the govt have done the past two years. Since 2020 Harsha n the opposition pleaded with the govt not to reduce taxes which is one of the paramount source of income to the country, but none of you all heeded to this plea bcoz you all are clueless n ignorant of the basic economy. Having so many Rajapakse bootlickers, how can you all run a country? Plz leave n go home n resume your profession as a lawyers. Take with you the other govt parliamentarians as well.

Prof. Bernard Benjamin Saturday, 30 April 2022 01:10 PM

Mr. Alli Sabry is not suitable to handle the Finance Ministry, a change of young economist should take over this position, other-wise it is going to be a disaster.

    Sambo Sunday, 01 May 2022 08:10 PM

No w you and the IMF recommend to increase taxes and everything possible. Are the public to be blamed. Your president and prime minister gave their lackeys unbelievable tax conses-ions and made them billionaires over night. The 225 were looking the other way and now the public are in starvation.
