People should be able to express their views without any restrictions according to the country's constitution. That is a fundamental right. Although it looks like we live in military state the ruling regime has not been given such powers.

People have the freedom of speech to criticize whoever they wish at any given time , and it is not up to any government unless by an amendment to the Article 14 to restrict this right !

There is a very big difference in criticism and threatening. This is a democratic country and everyone has the freedom of speech.

Blocking a Govt servant is wrong, but if the Govt appointment of a person is wrong, then it cannot be wrong to write about it. Under Emergency freedom of speech is not a crime.
Ruwan Fernando Wednesday, 01 April 2020 07:34 PM
Since when did criticizing a government official become a crime? Is the idea of freedom of speech no longer applicable in Sri Lanka?

Constructive criticism is always counterproductive and ought to be allowed. A feedback is essential for improvement. It is up to the viewer to accept, reject or do more queries on it. Obstructing duties is a crime. Accept this is a critical moment. Yet is there an emergency in effect?

If you can't take criticism, resign, and lets have a more competent person doing your job. Sri Lanka can't afford to have jackasses covering their asses by subverting the authority entrusted to them.

People will give SLPP a fitting reply at elections as they did in 1977, also in 1971 by elections. No one can silence peoples voice.

Article reads, "Individuals have published several posts and videos in social media criticizing and obstructing government officials’ duties while highlighting minor shortcomings". USE THOSE VIDEOS AND HIGHLIGHTED SHORTCOMINGS TO EDUCATE THE GOV'T WORKERS SO THEY CAN CORRECT WHAT WAS A FAILURE, LEAVING NO ROOM FOR FURTHER CRITICISM INSTEAD TRY TO ARREST THOSE WHO POINT OUT THE SHORTCOMINGS. Do these people have any brains at all ?

There is no point in taking action against individuals expressing their honest opinion when governments around the world are too afraid to criticise the culprit that caused all this pain in the first place.
