Ownership of both state and private media should be broad-based, a former media minister told Parliament today.
One time Media Minister Anura Priyadarashana Yapa was a ruling party MP now sits in opposition in the House said the media set up in the county should be changed.
“There should not be state- owned or private media, but we should have a new model. There should not be a signal owner of media institutions. The ownership of the media institutions should be broad based. The government should decide on a maximum stake one party should hold,” he said.
Also he said Sri Lanka should look at the model of BBC and Doordharshan of India.
“The frequencies of TV and radio channels belong to the nation. Therefore they should not be allowed to publish whatever news items they want,” he said.
Meanwhile, other MPs from both sides called for regulating of media. SJB MP S. M. Marikar called for stooping character assassination via media while State Minister Diana Gamage also called for a regulatory mechanism for media. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Electronic media, TV channels in particular, have become a real menace nowadays which is no better than social media. It should be regulated under a proper body.

Everything has gone up in price. It’s time the media channels also get their licenses jacked up in price. It’s totally unfair. It’s like corruption.

In Germany, only media that incite violence and racial hatred, constantly bring false reports and violate basic democratic rules are banned. However, it is a duty towards the public to uncover and publish shameful deeds by politicians, organizations and companies. For example, many politicians, ministers and even a president of the Federal Republic of Germany had to resign because of it. As well as a powerful president of the DFB (German Football Association) and a VW board chairman. That's a job for the press to fearlessly investigate and see crooks removed from office. A good example is also the resignation of US President Nixon, which was achieved through the media exposure of the Watergate scandal. There is still a long way to go for the local media to achieve something like this in Sri Lanka.
