Cricket legends Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara today condemned the recent acts of violence reported in the country and requested the people to stay together and to stand strong at tough times.

Cricket star Kumar Sangakkara in a tweet said there should be no place for racism and violence in the country.

“No one in Sri Lanka can be marginalised or threatened or harmed due to their ethnicity or religion,” he tweeted.

“We are one country and one people. Love, trust and acceptance should be our common mantra. No place for racism and violence. Stand together and stand strong,” he tweeted.

Former star cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya requested the people to act in a wise manner and to stand together at tough times.

“Disgusting and sickening to see the acts of violence in Sri Lanka,” he tweeted.

“I condemn strongly and to bring the involved culprits to justice. I request people of Sri Lanka to be wise and stay together in these tough times,” he tweeted.

Former Sri Lankan batsman Mahela Jayawardena strongly condemned the recent acts of violence and stated that everyone involved must be brought to justice regardless of race, religion or ethnicity.

“I grew up in a civil war which lasted 25 years and I don’t want the next generation to go through that,” he tweeted.

What is the point of having police can not protect people. People of this country want only ethnic harmony and let innocent small children live peacefully.

We have become sick with our rotten politicians' attitudes. Culprits never be caught in Sri Lanka because powerful politicians and law enforcing officers are behind all culprits.Sri Lanka is very famous for these type of acts and it hasHistory as well never be corrected. After every incident politicians preach sermon only.they are not aware of anyPrecautionary measures

We should start by disciplining the policemen who were standing by while the thugs set fire to homes and shops and murdered the occupants. They and their superiors has a case to answer. Why are we paying these people if they can stop those thugs committing crimes in front of their eyes.

It is high time that some one like Sanga or some one else have take in charge like Delhi CM Arvind KEJERIVAL.. We have to throw out our traditional party and politicians away and find a genuine corruption free leader. I feel like SANGA can play this role.

These messages have to be adhered by the minorities as thye have always hurt the majority you can go back to 30 years of war by the tamils

    dulan Thursday, 08 March 2018 08:03 AM

It was Sinhalese who used violence first against Tamils in 1958,1961, 1966 do not blame tamils for fighting back

    alex Thursday, 08 March 2018 09:06 AM

in a democracy where citizens belonging to every community have contributed to the development of this nation, there cannot be minorities and majority. All are equal.

    neil Thursday, 08 March 2018 07:26 AM

Very True. But not through violence. But the problem is our politicians!they try to stand for every one but not for Sinhalese, Therefore frustration creep into minds of Sinhalese gradually and when less educated and poor mass got a full dose of such frustration, the will let loose even for simple thing. Further this is aggravated by the fact that Police inaction due to political (again) interference. (Historically Police was cultivated with that fear for action). The result is people lose confidence on Police and take law in to their hand

our jealousy & racism took us to 30 years civil war now again another dont know how long for though but surely our uncivilized morons will speed up via DM Android App

The drivers should have a code and the government should enforce law impartially. Once you meet with an accident should have an official system, a process and there cannot be exchange of money to settle the situation. Further, there should be a law prohibiting anyone threatening or accusing and treat as an offence. The three wheeler, lorry, truck and bus drivers should be monitored by police and community and have a system to cancel their driving licences if they violate or act against civil rights. Treating this incident as a communal problem initially by media and politicians thereafter is hilarious and pathetic. What i see is we do not have far sighted people in this country. This is a matter of arrogance and aggressiveness of youth or drivers in Sri Lanka which has to be controlled overnight with out looking after vote base for next election. Inability to keep law and order will have more problems.

Haig urum Thursday, 08 March 2018 07:59 AM

What we are seeing is the outcome of extremism encouraged by politicians and some religious leaders. Those speaking out against it are those who believe a single master stroke will fix the evils of a lifetime by these folks. Get involved with a passion.. then one day your children will reap the rewards. Like the gingers in a hand, the Sinhalese, Muslims, and Tamils must all work in unison to better the lives of all.God bless you all for your noble hearts.

It makes me sick to see the level we sri lankans have stooped down to. We boast of a "Proud Heritage" of over 2500 years. We boast of following the teachings of the lord Bhudda who was the most peaceful man ever. We boast of having a rich culture. However for all our boasts we are nothing but savages with delusions of grandeur. We don't need other outside parties to destroy us. We are doing it to ourselves.

    Hi

christian persecution Thursday, 08 March 2018 10:31 AM

While Cricket legends condemned the recent acts of violence and requested the people to stay together, DM publish Dr. Nalin's article. He was my lecturer at the University of Colombo and he was very good in quntum mechanics and astro physics. But later he was a strong Sinhala Buddhist and wanted other minorities to be as slaves. All races worked in Sri Lanka upto 1983. Then Tamils were separated by Black July 1983. Then 2018 March recent incidents to separate Muslims. Then next? to separate christian and persecution .

    SAM Thursday, 08 March 2018 10:40 AM

Forget about all the crap and waste of time. Catch hold of all those arrested and give the punishment. For sure these rascals will be released and then play the same Circus Drama in parliament with the paper man doing the back stage and the audience pay for the entertainment.

well spoken Kumar and Mahela/ Sanath. Proud of you guys. I for one only acknowledge one race and that is Human. Please continue to speak for Harmonay.
