Nethmi Ahinsa Fernando became Sri Lanka's youngest ever Commonwealth Games medallist and the first medallist in Wrestling when she beat Australia's Irene Symeonidis in the Bronze medal match in the Women's Freestyle 57kg category at the Birmingham 2022 games on Friday.
The 18-year-old out-wrestled her vastly more experienced Australian opponent, winning 10-00 on technical superiority in a bout that lasted 1 minute and 51 seconds.
Fernando received a walkover in her Quarter-Final match against Emilienne Essombe Tiako of Cameroon, before losing 10-00 to Anshu Malik in the semi-final and then beating Symeonidis in the Bronze medal match.
She was a part of the Sri Lankan wrestling contingent that trained in Hungary recently in preparation for the games.
