While rejecting reports circulating on social media, Sri Dalada Maligawa Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela stated that the electricity bill received for the Sri Dalada Maligawa was paid using the facility provided by the chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL).

He told the Daily Mirror that after raising the electricity bills issue, he received a Rs 2.7 million bill.

"We have not received any electricity bill for the Sri Dalada Maligawa and this was the first time we received such a huge bill," he said.

However, we talked to the PUCSL chairman. He made some arrangements to pay the bill. After that, we paid Rs. 1.3 million to settle the bill, DiyawadanIa Nilame added. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

This is ridiculous. The complete opposite of Buddhist teaching.

    Sisira Saturday, 26 November 2022 10:34 PM

Whenever you get the chance attack our Buddhism , you 70 year old converted Christian who collaborated with the Indian Army against your own people . As you not college educated you wouldn’t know the great civilisations of Sinhalese and the Tamils. Your ancestors were poor Tamils and the Christian missionaries gave your people some food and gave the cross and your people became Christians. And now you want to defend the British. Go to Britain from Canada and become a chef and toilet cleaner for the brown skin Hindu Prime Minister of Britain. You low class convert.

    Man Sunday, 27 November 2022 06:16 AM

It is nothing against Buddhism for illumination at night. An absurd comment in all sense.

    Judge Sunday, 27 November 2022 11:45 AM

@Sisira: A complete useless comment. Why didn't your religion save your country? Shouldn't your corrupt politicians have been punished by your religion by its divine power? Wonder why it is not happening?

Never plundered from people like Rajapakshas' . Why not you take legal action, if so? Those are offerings of pilgrims and income from lands donated by kings.

This is an English news paper. If you can't write in English, don't write at all. It is disrespectful.

    Prasath Sunday, 27 November 2022 01:44 AM

Of ourselves if you use it you have to pay for it. all are trying to be basil at the airport lounge, free free and free at tax payers money

Dantha Galawaw Sunday, 27 November 2022 02:39 AM

Well done CEB. unlike a poor hospital such as Castle, Maligawa is a very rich institution pure negligence if they default on electricity bills.

    Punchi Sunday, 27 November 2022 02:50 AM

When Buddha was alive there was no electricity only oil lamps. Why do we superior Sinhala Buddhists need to use electric lights and loud speakers which are Christian discoveries and creations introduced during the colonial period in our places of worship

    Mendis Sunday, 27 November 2022 03:25 AM

What is the days income of the Dalada Maligawa.

    Sarath Sunday, 27 November 2022 04:39 AM

The Maligawa collects millions of rupees as donations. The Diyawadena Nilame is utterly corrupt.

Food first religious place last Sunday, 27 November 2022 04:45 AM

The public can't just pay less than half their electricity bill. The rest of the 1.4 million the Maligawa. didn't pay the will to be borne by the citizens of this nation. CEB is already losing money. How many decades the religious place has gotten free electricity? The whole matter shows the PUCSL chairman is no good the country with just making greater the losses to State Owned Enterprises. The Chairman of PUCSL is committing financial crime by giving lower than cost electricity to the Dalada Maligawa. When will there be justice for the poor with electricity bills, instead the PUCSL Chairman Yakka gives subsidy to Maligawa.

Aruna Rahula Sunday, 27 November 2022 05:02 AM

    Biggest issue in the country.

Mr Mentally Weakened Sunday, 27 November 2022 06:19 AM

The bill was for 2.7million, but they do trick and get away with paying less than half that. The poor people will have their charges increased to make up for losses. Government should hold PUCSL chairman responsible for ongoing losses especially when too low cost prices given to religious places.

    IndependentJudge Sunday, 27 November 2022 07:01 AM

Why should PUSL pay electricity bills of religious institutions? What happens to the huge donations received by Dalada maligawa? Too much religious beliefs are also not good.

    Sunil Sunday, 27 November 2022 07:34 AM

Entrance to any religious place of worship should be free for all. Dalada Maligawa charges horrific entrance fees from tourists. Why cannot they pay their electricity bill?

Nilmini Welivita Sunday, 27 November 2022 08:17 AM

The Bhudist should be given extra previlages over other religions as we are the majority.

    Judge Sunday, 27 November 2022 12:09 PM

Like to pay this bill? No wonder SL is where it is when looking at the thinking of people living there. Will SL ever develop?

    Jude Sunday, 27 November 2022 10:03 AM

I thought some devoted Buddhist Philanthropist Paid the whole Bill !! Nowadays philanthropist throw money to sponsor Beauty Pageants, Huh!!

    ASS Sunday, 27 November 2022 10:57 AM

Not about religion but if limited and expensive resources can be better used from a country perspective, from an institutional/individual perspective if saved resources can be used better when millions are starving, and if subsidies can be made more appropriate when millions are finding difficult to pay and survive.

    Reformist Sunday, 27 November 2022 11:37 AM

SL is full of religious fanatics, and for religion, they will do anything blindly. Where are those blind faith people to pay this electricity bill? This is not a one off, it will come in every month. No argument that SL should protect buildings with historical significance like Dalada Maligawa, but it should not be done due to fanaticism and believing religions will solve all problems. Why not ask someone who likes to go to "Nirvana" to pay the electricity bills. A politician perhaps (best use of corrupt money)? That will end this debate. Btw, who will pay the electricity bill of the poor who can't put a meal on the table. Not go to Nirvana if someone helps that poor?

    Lamm Sunday, 27 November 2022 12:23 PM

I think that this sacred place has to be respected as we all Sri Lankans treasure it ...this is a historical place and yet what happened to all money collected as entrance fees and I don't know why can't they use to pay this bill ..I think each hundred of foreigners come and at least it they get one lakhs per day and after all expenses they could save some money to pay this bills . Why not ???

    A Sunday, 27 November 2022 12:55 PM

Buddhism is a principal teaching of good living . Our Monks are making a good living out this valued principal which was tought by Lord Buddha. This is the Issue Religion divides all countires.

Shelly Belly Monday, 28 November 2022 03:56 AM

There needs to be some control over so much electricity being used. Most of this money could be used to feed and help your own who are poor and starving. Those same people who live in the shadow of this temple and those who come from all ends of the island to worship the buddha.

Tissa Fernando Monday, 28 November 2022 08:53 AM

They should curtail on these night lights using public electricity or generator and start investing in solar power. They can get enough donations from well wishers. That way , not only they can have the lights on and substantially reduce their public electricity consumption.

    ajith Monday, 28 November 2022 09:23 AM

corruption at the most sacred religious place in the country. Do we need to say anything more

Tak Tik Tuk Monday, 28 November 2022 10:46 AM

Sri Lanka really need to move toward renewable energy fast. If only SL can form a competent govt and create a industry for renewable energy, a lot of problems can be solved and fast track development can be achieved.

Mohamed Adham Monday, 28 November 2022 02:46 PM

With the Maligawa's huge daily income, this will be a very simple amount to pay. But yet they have paid less than the Billed amount. Will we get to pay the additional amount NOT PAID ??? Anyway it is the citizens who would have to ultimately foot these bills.
