The poaching of wild animals in national parks has been increased because of the increase in chicken prices in the market, Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Officers' Association (SLWCOA) said.

A senior official of the association told the Daily Mirror that poaching of wild animals in Polonnaruwa Minneriya, Somawathiya, Wasgamuwa, Maduruoya, Jalagelum Nimna National Park as well as other forest reserves has seen an increase.

The rapid increase in the chicken price in the market has resulted in an increase in the demand for killing wild animals.

Therefore, the association requested the government to make the Wildlife Conservation Department an essential service and organise a programme to protect Sri Lanka's forests and wildlife resources.

The association also mentioned that they have to curtail their duties on Saturdays and Sundays due to the current fuel crisis. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

Elephamts and Leopards from the wild poaching in human habitats which once belonged to them and now Humans from a supposedly civilized territory poaching from the wild.......all for Survival. prioritise agro based food eco system. eg use the Civil defense force and now idle backhoes etc from the construction industry and almost overnight cultivate the much needed raw material for chicken feed Maize aka bada iringu. 2 months time crop will be coming. seed won't be that costly in dollars rest is local labour. what's needed is a hands on visionary living in the present. RW is fixing the next 25 years. Another good Minister for food security should fix the next 2.5months.

If the Govt can think small at grassroots level with small cottage industries to manufacture food just enough for the village type of concepts. something close to the age old barter system we as a nation will 1. improve our SME sector. 2. reduce food scarcity. 3. become self sufficient. 4. develop entrepreneurship. eg tea smallholders as opposed to big estates. chicken big names Bairaha chitombu maxis etc as opposed to small chicken farmers. then the food waste at home green leaf from the garden will go into poultry farmi g at a micro scale for village consumption. large commercial livestock companies to focus on export markets maldives Seychelles Madagascar etc and urban supply.

With the inflated prices of chicken the authorities should be on alert to ensure that dogs/cats meat are not sold in the market to unsuspecting customers

lol. One of the useless departments. These guys have not done anything useful to minimize elephant issues and reduce damage done by monkeys, wild boar, peacock and similar animals to crops but just talk nonsense. What should happen is allow people to rear certain wild animals for meat purpose. For example Wild Boar. Then these guys also should comeup with a plan to minimize wild animals that are destroying crops. For example move any captured animal or animals to designated large areas for wild life.

Encroachment into forest, is damaging the forest and then means Sri Lanka going backwards on it's so called commitment to Paris Agreement. All of it was always a sham, as villagers when they clear forest land directly cause effect for climate change. Removing all import restrictions and letting importers use any means such as Undial and Hawala is the way forward. Central bank really messing our economy up, and industries, and now the wild life too.
