Two other representative bodies of the private sector tourism stakeholders yesterday joined the bandwagon in urging those engaging in protests to reconsider their decision as such events will only worsen the challenges faced by the local tourism sector.

Nishard Wijetunge

The Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO) and One Industry One Voice voiced their concerns about the further hit destination Sri Lanka would have, if protests continue.

“Our members are concerned about the negative impact on destination Sri Lanka, due to the negative media reports already circulating overseas in our generating markets. Therefore, there is a concern that the forthcoming protests can have a further negative impact on the destination,” said the SLAITO and One Industry One Voice in a joint statement.

The representative bodies were referring to the plans of several political parties, trade unions, civil organisations and student movements to hold a mass anti-government rally on November 2.

The Hotel Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) also raised concerns this week, pointing out that the sector is always pushed back to the ground just as the situation in the country begins to improve.

Since after months of promotions and planning, nearly 70 DMCs and hoteliers will take part at the upcoming World Travel Market, SLAITO President Nishard Wijetunge said there is no room for any negativity going forward.

“The stakeholders will attend the travel show in a few days to promote the destination in a positive light. We, therefore, urge the authorities and everyone concerned, to ensure that the protests and events are peaceful and help move forward, to build our economy in a sustainable manner,” he asserted.

Another selfish bastards joined the bandwagon of the bootlickers of the crooked government. They only think about today. In the longer term, it is far more important, and not just for the tourism sector, to have a stable good democratic government than a corrupt and criminal gang like the current one consisting of thieves, looters, scammers and murderers trampling on human rights by ordering their politicized and corrupt police force beating peaceful demonstrators in a barbaric manner. Only these brave activists can send this dictatorial regime to hell. The negative media reports already circulating overseas are a good weapon against the brutal military regime of Ranil and his puppet masters. This helps to maintain the last democratic rules and to force the rotten regime to give in.

These protests are organized by those hellbent on ensuring that the economic crisis is not resolved anytime soon, and if they could to worsen it for there narrow political objectives. That is the only way through which these group seek to be relevant. If they can destroy the up coming winter season tourist arrivals they would be most pleased. For them it would be almost mission accomplished. To hell with the country so long as their power grabbing agenda could be furthered. Only hope that our otherwise gullible public would not get caught in this snare. What we desperately need now is stability to reinvigorate foreign exchange earning industries.

    Cooray Saturday, 29 October 2022 10:52 AM

Madness!!! What are these new protests? We are just trying to get on our feet. Just when bookings have started to trickle in. Don't these idiots understand or are they trying to deliberately sabotage our industry? Clearly jobless people who have never run a business on their own and risked their all to create opportunities and income for other.

Are you worried about the immediate future of your industry or the long term future of the country. Nobody is trying to underplay the importance of business or trade but under the guise economic recovery we are burying the opportunity for real and responsible change of our nations future. We need to feel the pain to to earn a more sustainable future for our country. It’s people like you who stall it’s progress for a few $

    Traveller Saturday, 29 October 2022 10:52 AM

Tourism anywhere in the world in today's economy won't be a thriving industry. Rising interest rates and increasing cost of airfare will certainly be obstacles to international travel. It has nothing to do with protests, but everything to do with the world economy, and the law and order, human rights situation especially in Sri Lanka.

    Ernest Saturday, 29 October 2022 10:56 AM

County’s problem is bigger than yours… needs of many outweighs needs of few. Protest has to happen to bring about long term solutions to underlying problems

Love Sri Lanka Saturday, 29 October 2022 10:57 AM

Country before self. There comes a time in a man’s life that sacrifices have to be made for the greater good of the country. If the protest are not held now and the required system change is not achieved, it will be only a matter of time before there will be total disaster taking place to our motherland. Let’s hit the bottom now as we are almost there and then move forward than letting a perfect storm build up in the near future.

If anyone wants to promote tourism catch those hooligans who destroyed part of yala national park last week and incarcerate them. These incidents not only destroy tourism but also will damage the little reputation whatever we have left to nothing.

First request this sordid government led by a guy who has no mandate from the people to restore democracy and ensure the fundamental rights of the people. Then the government should adopt a course of action to bring back some economic stability. Until then the suffering masses will continue to protest. Some of those who fell grievously ill when under arrest under the PTA were not given even a tablet of paracetamol. You who are in air-conditioned rooms will never understand the plight of the people.

    Sunil Saturday, 29 October 2022 11:32 AM

First request this sordid government led by the modern day Idi Amin, who has no mandate from the people, to restore democracy and ensure the fundamental rights of the people. Then the government should adopt a course of action to bring back some economic stability, something it has not commence as yet. Until then the suffering masses will continue to protest. Some of those who fell grievously ill when under arrest under the PTA were not given even a tablet of paracetamol for many days. You people who are in air-conditioned rooms throughout the day will never understand the plight of the people

    Despicable Saturday, 29 October 2022 11:37 AM

Dear Sir, Please think of the whole country at large. This aragalaya is necessary to pave the way for a lasting solution to the country. Don't forget that you are able to even have this comfort because of the previous aragalaya. If Nondisena was in power, this country would have been a killing field with bloodbath today. Don't forget that.

Sajith wants an election JVP disrupts anything every year. student unions do everything else other than studying to get qualified abd serve the nation as professionals. ultimately every industry suffers because people think mouths are given to criticize while piticiams and govt officials like to take bribes it's people or voters who give them the bribes. now everyone is protesting.

    Aquarius Saturday, 29 October 2022 12:08 PM

Why don't these spineless idiots direct their voices on those in power who has caused this mayhem in the country. Either they are being used as pawns or they simply don't care about the suffering people. RW and the corrupt politicians must be licking their fingers with guys like these coming in their defence.

    Waco Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:07 PM

Force the Government to hold Presidencial and General Elections immediately. A gang of looters are ruling the country. It is utmost important to ekemnate these looters, if country to move forward. Just “ Bandaging “will not help.

    BBM Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:07 PM

Protesters won't harm or hinder any local or foreign tourist. We all need a sane set of rulers who can form a good government for all secters to prosper in long haul while minimizing if there are any bad impact during short periods of these timely brave protests. Real situation of the coumtry is not a secreat.

Ranjith Anthick Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:16 PM

I too, strongly feel that let us not bring the people to the road to achieve our political agenda. Let's give 6 months for the country to stabilize, with the business activities resumes normalcy with the Festive season round the corner (Christmas) and National New year-2023. Let there be a General election by May 2023. No one can revive the country in a miracules way. Let the country breath for a while. Some group may gain and some group may lose. Our sufferings should ease-out gradually over the period and we the public has to bear with some commitment towards Sri Lanka. There is no point in arguing that it was not our fault and protesting over same.

    dinesh Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:16 PM

the question whether the protests are allowed to be peaceful or not rests with the SL police...depending on the instructions from their masters...not the protestors...people are exercising their fundamental right...while he police steps on peoples fundamental rights...note the fundamental rights violation cases against top cops...

    Rajan Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:20 PM

My personal view is that all the citizens including kids " Must stop work on a particular day and pray silently for our future". Example on 1st of every month at a particular time, say 12 noon, even if we are on the road we must stop the vehicles, in schools teachers must stop teaching, in work places stop work, at home stop cooking etc. (Except hospitals and other essential services). ONLY PRAYERS AND GOD CAN SOLVE THE PROBLEMS WE ARE FACING NOW and not by any human beings. Otherwise it will be a waste of time and our tax money

    Sambo Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:31 PM

You are fighting for the safety of your business and profits while these people are fighting for their lives and starvation with no heed from the relevant authorities. So have mercy on them as well.

    Eper Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:40 PM

Protesters must be aware of the tourism/export/production industry and must ensure that the reputation of the country is not tarnished.Kindly protest without causing inconvenience to the public

    Gunadasa Saturday, 29 October 2022 01:45 PM

I request young gentlemen, ladies and young girls to bottle up a bit further for the sake of downtrodden as a result of outright robbery. Its going to be not long for the band of thieves get berried politically etc. for good.

pantha kumaran Saturday, 29 October 2022 02:04 PM

There is no point in blaming the protesters , but blame the Ranil Rajapakse regime. We all know that we have no future unless some thing is done seriously. Ranil Rajapakse wants to keep on carrying his job as the President by supressing law abiding protesters.

    JOHAN Saturday, 29 October 2022 02:29 PM

SL Government created this situation. Before two years they know everything but no precautionary measures were taken. Now no excuse they have to face all consequences otherwise just say"WE ARE INCAPABLE BUFFALOES JUST CLINGING ON TO POWER TO FILL OUT STOMACHS". and get out

    Truth Saturday, 29 October 2022 02:41 PM

We respect your patriotism. What is your reaction to the Yala incidents. Doesn't that hurt the feelings of ordinary Sri Lankans. Don't they deserve good governance. Why should the people get on to the streets if they don't have grievances.

    Asanka Saturday, 29 October 2022 02:59 PM

You guys feed them and now you can't control them. What comes around what goes around

    Mizaru Saturday, 29 October 2022 03:01 PM

The masses are hungry and starving. They need food and not donkey bed tourists we see in Sri Lanka. They use our lorries with seats or the ramshackled third class in the trains. Uncle, ask Ranil to go and have an election. That is the only way out.

    firdhous Saturday, 29 October 2022 03:11 PM

Well, it means hotel owners have no interest on the contry’s economy but only on their own interests. Why still many people refuse to accept that it is such behavior that has brought the country to its knee. If they have a concern, the tone should be reasonable but not to be politicized.

    Don Saturday, 29 October 2022 03:22 PM

You are representing only one sector. There are many others struggling. As long as corrupt politicians harass innocent young by misusing PTA, the protests won’t go away. You guys should tell the government to stop people using legitimate rights.

    ala Saturday, 29 October 2022 04:09 PM

Your concern is industry , out concern is our country and the future of our kids. We stand with the aragalaya!! We people are the real stakeholders not your organisation.

    Anthony. R Saturday, 29 October 2022 06:29 PM

A very selfish concern, I may say. Internationally tourism is at a low, with falling economy, high airfares, etc. But basically a country should be stable, even to attract even the poorest tourist. Power cuts,Fuel shortage, Medical shortage ,Poverty, Starvation are not Tourist attractions,SriLanka is for Nature Tourism, and the recent Yala incident don't give good publicity for Tourism. The Ruling Regime is Not concerned about it, and so there has to be a Voice, A Language they understand ,and that is all about the "Aragalaya" . Jayawewa to the peaceful Protesters.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Saturday, 29 October 2022 08:01 PM

Prior to the introduction of tourism we had plenty of food, specially seafood and fruits, with the blooming of tourism the quality food purchased by hotels deprived the average SriLankans of quality food, further our nation's cultural behaviour too was tarnished, the era of splendour life vanished. An era should be created for all Sri Lankans to afford to taste meals in 5 star hotels. We cannot have a poor class all the time.

    Prem Sunday, 30 October 2022 01:01 AM

Amongst many, this is another selfish bastard who is trying to cater to Indians, Arabs and the Chinese who come, eat-shit-fart (air pollution) and .... leave bad habit for our people to inherit. 11,300 tourist arrived in October must be the invisible tourists ! All made up to mislead people.

Sri Lankan Sunday, 30 October 2022 08:31 AM

Tourism is an important source of revenue and nobody wants to underplay it. But please don’t runaway with the thought that tourism is the only business the country is dependent on. Our businesses are being severely affected by successive and corrupt regimes including this one.( SLPP/RW/UNP coalition) Many thousands are being deprived of an income because of the decisions taken by this Gov. Who has given you the godam right to change the course of history in our country. We want our future restored to sustainable levels and not our immediate $ situation.

Sam Sen Sunday, 30 October 2022 11:31 AM

Why don’t you guys force the govt to arrest all those who looted the country? Why you only expect the victims to wait? Can these tour companies feed the starving children? They (the tour companies) bribe the politicians and continue to support corruption.

Pearl of the Indian Ocean Sunday, 30 October 2022 03:23 PM

I see the majority of views above have brain in their head, a few are sitting on their brains. First priority should be the people/masses of the country, their well being and possibility of having the basics in life food clothing and a roof above their heads. Majority of tourists travel to Asian countries in this day and age for sex, drugs, finding partners and a cheap get away from their winters. Let the hotels/tourism bare the loss till the country can raise it's head and the masses are able to live with the basics. Protests MUST go on to force a general election asap. All those responsible for bringing the country to this state should be taken to courts, all monies recovered and a long jail term given to each and every one of the and last but not the least ALL their passport impounded. Disgusted

    dot Monday, 31 October 2022 06:32 AM

The media speaks of soup kitchens for the hungry .media speaks of lack of health facilities in hospitals .UNO speaks of food shortages ..One wonders if tourists reading the concerns of fellow humans in Srilanka that has led to these protests , would be indifferent to these concerns to come over to live in hotels of five star comforts ..if they do come before the concerns were resolved then its a sad reality of human indifference..or the extent of care for each other .

Roberta Flack Monday, 31 October 2022 06:32 AM

Trading off Sri Lanka’s future generation, democracy and its freedom for a few dollars more??? How shortsighted can we be ? No doubt tourism is a large industry for SL but let it be known that the cause of the country is greater than your industry. You are worried about one season of tourism when the nation is worried about the several generations of freedom for its children from the political vultures who have ruling us. Your attitude also shows how disengaged you are from the realities of our nation.
