The Cabinet has granted approval to purchase 10 million Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccines at the cost of US$ 52.5 million as direct procurement from the Serum Institute in India.
In addition, the government also to enter into an agreement between AstraZnera institute in Britain and Sri Lanka State Pharmaceutical Corporation to buy 3.5 million vaccines manufactured by the AstraZnera institute.
The Health Ministry said the government has plans to vaccinate 14 million people out of the country's total population against COVID-19 epidemic.
The Cabinet also approved to sign the Standardized Indemnification Agreement submitted by the COVAX mechanism in order to expedite the vaccination programme under COVAX facility.
