A A A

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry recorded an income of US$ 131.5 million for May from 83,309 arrivals, the lowest monthly income thus far in 2023 since the battered industry started making a notable improvement from the final quarter of last year. It is a decline from US$ 166.5 million in April and the year-to-date highest of US$ 198.1 million in March.

May’s slight decline isn’t a cause for much concern as typically May is considered off season.

For May 2022, Sri Lanka recorded only US$ 43.5 million as income from tourism as the industry hit a nadir again due to social unrest and political instability with arrivals falling to 30,207.

The collapse of the rupee by 80 percent last year also made Sri Lanka a cheaper travel destination for tourists.

Sri Lanka has recorded over half a million tourist arrivals by the end of May and tourism authorities expect to welcome two million tourists by the end of this year.

Tourism is not an industry. it is a service which depends on so any external factors and is unreliable. SL economy is solely lacking real industries hence has to send rural women as domestic workers to earn dollars so that politicians and inept professionals can import their dutyfree luxuries

Oh, now I get it. In the past few months the bunch of Ranil and Rajapaksa cronies, including the biggest liar Harin, was bragging about the record number of tourist arrivals. So, there is a negative correlation between tourist arrival numbers and income from tourism! Go, figure that. These idiots must understand, not to categorize visiting expatriate Sri Lankans as "tourists." Expats come in large numbers to visit their families during New Year and Wesak seasons. They are not "tourists." They won't spend dollars/euros/pounds to stay in hotels or to pay for visiting tourist sites.

Tourism low season starts in May, ends around Oct. It has been like that from the time tourism started. What is newsworthy in this?

Sri Lanka, North Korea or Afganistan take your pick Monday, 05 June 2023 11:08 AM

Sri Lankan tourism will have number dip out like what's happened to North Korea and Afghanistan since the Taliban dictatorship took over. Countries with repressive regimes like here will only be visited by tourists from countries with like nasty governments. Who wants social media comments about visiting places with oppression and lack of freedoms for personal (selfish) fun. Shaming those who go to countries with repressive regimes is the norm in Western social media.

To attract 'cashed up' tourists SL has to improve the quality of tourism related services. You cannot market just the beauty of the country and expect to earn big bucks!

Went to Ella over the weekend. The facilities are excellent, quite a number of foreigners as well. Notably the 3 wheeler menace needs to be sorted out if tourism is to prosper. Frankly tuk tuk should be banned in Sri Lanka

Tourists are probably realising that this country is only after their money. Huge visa fees, hefty fees to enter any site (more than 10 times the charge that local pay). No decent toilet facilities what so ever.

Post pandemic there were many tourists visiting the country to relax and enjoy the beauty of the country. Now that Covid 19 is under control the tourist numbers have started to dwindle to pre-pandemic propotions. At the sametime we have got too greedy and tourist rates and charges for food and accomodation has skyrocketed in leaps and bounds and Sri Lanka is no more a cheap deistination for tourists. As a former Sri Lankan i am weighing my options about visiting the country at the end of this month because it has become too expensive since my last visit.

Yes correct DW: Tourists are probably realising that this country is only after their money. Huge visa fees, hefty fees to enter any site (more than 10 times the charge that local pay - entrance for lotus tower for tourist 20$ and for locals 500lkr - 2$). No decent toilet facilities what so ever. Annoying dogs on the roads, barking all night... The LKR is not a world currency and governments/politics invents an unrealistic value relative to the dollar. etc...
