Western, Eastern and Northern coastal areas are duly protected from the possible effects of any nuclear accidents that may occur in the atomic power plant in India, Deputy Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ajith P Perera informed Parliament today.
Responding to an oral question raised by MP Chandima Gamage in the House yesterday the Deputy Minister said Sri Lanka will be able to receive information on any nuclear accident from the International Atomic Agency on time as it is a signatory of the international convention on atomic safety.
He said Sri Lanka is equipped with warning centers of radiation disasters in Colombo, Puttalam, Mannar, Delft Island, KKS, Galle, Trincomalee, and Kandy.(Yohan Perera)

Truth is very much different, What about radiation ? Good portion of our country will be adversely affected . Minister Why are the Indians having a nuclear plant at Southern tip of India ? Is it to safe guard most their population and to make Sri Lankans guinea pigs ?

If there is a nuclear accident in India, SL will definitely be affected. Warning centers can't protect us.

The South Indians are more at risk than Sri Lankans, so this statement is absurd. There are also other nuclear plants further North in India.

This is so for every non-nuclear country neighbouring a nuclear state. Atleast these early warning will enable SL to take early protection measures.

SL will NEVER be ready to handle a nuclear catastrophe in the region. Stop dreaming!

If there is a nuclear accident then not just the north but the whole of Sri Lanka would be devastated by direct radiation and radio active material moved by air, this minister is ignorant beyond belief.

What an idiot ! Obviously the guy has no idea of radiation poisoning and how it travels. This is the price we pay for having put the uneducated in positions of power !!
